Default Airbox leak question

Hopefully this isn't too silly a question. I realize it is well accepted that a hole or crack in the airbox causes various starting and running problems. I was looking at mine yesterday and it seems the airbox is fully upstream of the fuel distributor and throttle body so I'm wondering how an airbox leak causes those problems. Looking at it it seems the worst that would happen is that you'd get unfiltered air but that only an air leak somewhere downstream of the fuel and throttle body would cause leaning out.

Hi troy this has been asked before and it is not a sily question , once yo undeerstand it is easy. The air box if you look at is contains the area the air filter is sitting and the entire intake. The part that back fires and blows up is the part inderneath your filter down stream of the metering system I f fuel pools in their and it blows there goes your air bo x, lots of unmetered there and a PITA repair. in fact the pop off valve goes to that ribberd area to the left dircktly down into the plastic intake ( the bottom half of the box ) that fastens to the runners.

if you realy want to understand look one up on ebay and wee what it consists of. Then the ligttbulb will go on.
