I think, for a daily driver that gets up to full operating temp at every use, 5,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. For toys, or cars that get frequent trips of ten minutes or less (but an occasional trip where the car can reach full temp), 3,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. For cars that are unusually well-cared for, John's system is just fine also!
