Bakersfield, CA Mechanic
Hi, I recently purchased an 88 Porsche 911. I have NO, ZERO automotive skills. My car is in good condition, but needs some work. The AC doesn't work, neither does the cig lighter, etc. Ive read some of the posts, and most are too complicated for me! Does any one know a mechanic in Bakersfield, CA who does a good job?
Thanks!! so much. I am excited to reading many more posts on this forum.

The Porsche community speaks quite highly of you. Interestingly, I just purchased your book, but the amount of help I will need will far surpass even the greatest of books! It took me hours just to open the gas tank!! I am curious if you are available to do some work on the 1988 911 I just purchased??? Please? I think it may need a tune up, and then it has some "minor" problems, like the A/C. THANKS.

JJF, What you do is have a helper with a lap top set up on Rennlist PM. Send Pete a PM that first promises stake, a very large stake, juicy stake exactly as he likes it. When he responds your helper hits him with the first question. You are free to wrench on valve covers and stay dirty while your helper types the questions and reads the responsed out loud. It works every time. I am 100 miles away and I surely saved $1,000's this way. I could pay the lap top helper $20 per hour and be $140 per hour up.

JJF: Welcome to the P-car world, it's a great place to spend time. You bought a very good model based on year, it should serve you well. Regarding helping you, I would love to but I can't do more than what Douglas discussed. Unfortunately I'm not retired, I'm on disability - a '67 S a few years ago was the final straw for my shoulder, which had to be replaced with a man-made one in '04. Now just sweeping out the garage or changing a light bulb in a ceiling-mounted lamp can present problems on some days, but that's OK because everything else still works!
Enough about me, but you're in luck. There is an independent Porsche repair shop on White Lane called Stockdale Automotive. I've never met the owner, but have spoken with him, by phone, a few times. His name is Chuck and he's got a very good reputation; I should really get over there one of these days and say hello!

LOL! My surgery was in 4/04, and I was not able to drive the SC until the fall of that year. I think that the "need" to drive it helped the re-hab process, and for some weird reason my arm is in one of its more restful positions while shifting - almost no strain at all. I think that my doctor, who has owned a Boxster S and an M3 (now waiting for his Tesla Roadster) did that on purpose!
