good question Nick . The only personthat could really answer this is a true mech or someone who has tried. I am not sure bit if the 80 has an extrnal regulator yo are closer than if it doesn't. This alternator is obviously a higher output which is no big deal but my main concern ( as i am sure yours is ) would be shaft size, mounting points and shroud clearance. Pete might be a good source of info or Steve.

too bad you can't physically look at both ...

I checked the number (964-603-156-01) on Pelican and they show it as a special order non-returnable item costing $1278.00. I think it may go on a 993, 996 or some later model Porsche.

"here's a pic of the one in question;"

That's a 964/993 alternator and not compatible with any earlier 911 for
a number reasons, the most at which is the shaft length (long) for the special
dual speed (alt/fan).

Why not get an alternator for an SC? I have an 83 SC and have no issues with power... What do you have in there that would require more output? Maybe they can do something at an alternator shop to increase the output?

A new Bosch unit for an SC is 75 Amps. The New unit for the Carrera (84-89) is 90 Amps... Might not be to hard to fit the 84-89 unit... Not sure. Maybe Steve or Pete can chime in... Doesnt seem to me that 15 amp is really worth all the trouble unless you are doing something interesting. You could remove your AC and you would have an extra 15 amp without changing anything...

The 80 SC has a 70 amp alt, the 82 SC has a 75 amp. Might also be able to go up to a 82 unit... here is a link... http://www.allzim.com/acatalog/New_A...911_82_83.html

you're right... it always comes down to availability and price, its outragous what theses things cost at times... but Ive found that I always spend more than expected when moving from stock... (maybe its just my limited skills to modify)... so I always go stock unless its a bolt in replacement...
