Clive, there is no need to paint that carefully. I did mine yesterday, and I just painted over the entire word (recesses and a bit on the surface), waited for the white out to dry for a minute or two and then rubbed the **** surface in a circular motion on a piece of paper towel that had turpentine on it on a flat surface. It took the paint off the surface and left the the new white paint in the recesses.
