Mike,

My car has 73K on it. Thanks, it is in excellent condition I/O. The PO took very good care of it, extremely clean throughout. Your's looks great too.

I paid less than 20K for it. The market is all over the place though. From what I found during my search, it was a reasonable purchase. The PO did not have the Fuchs, he replaced them with the 17" twists that are on it now.

Nice to talk with another 86 coupe owner, I'm planning a few minor projects over the winter so I may be seeking advice, photos of other cars.

Cool

Congrats! I bought my 80 Euro 911SC almost a year ago now (Jan. 18). I've spent the last year restoring her back to original everything (Wheels, engine-no mod.'s, even the radio)! I'm one of those classic types. I'm trying to get her back to showroom condition and all I'm lacking now are floor mats.

I'm going to Germany in a month to buy a bunch of gear that I can't find here.

Good luck!

Mike & John,

Greetings from another 86 coupe/Guards Red/F-R spoiler owner! Just bought mine 2 months ago, and this is my first post, so give me a shout-out too, eh?

Mike-did you install the headlight update kit yourself? I'm considering it as well, so I'm trying to figure out what parts I need, where to buy, how much it'll cost, and how to get that trim ring painted.

Eric,
My car already had the H1 headlights when i bought it. By 'update', i assume that you have the U.S. spec H5's. A common conversion is to change to Euro H1 or H4. The H1's are no longer produced, and are quite $$ and rare.(seen sold on ebay for upwards of $800./pr)
The H4's are readily available and much cheaper. PelicanParts.com (great website for Porschephiles) sells them, and below is a tech article describing the installation:
<a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_h4_headlamps/mult_h4_headlamps.htm" target="_blank">http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_h4_headlamps/mult_h4_headlamps.htm</a>

Hope this helps.

Other mods i've done to my car, if you want feedback:
1)lowered (25"F, 24.5"R)/corner balance/alignment
2)Bilstein HD shocks
3)Turbo Tie rods
4)Bump steer kit
5)Fuchs 16x8 R, 16x7 F
6)Stainless Steel brake lines
7)Vanity plate:

Mike,

Since we have winter hear in Indiana, I'm looking to do a few projects you have already completed.

1) Install new shift coupler bushings.
2) Turbo Tie Rods
3) Install new shocks

Did you do your own work, or use a local mechanic?

My mechanic did the work. Since you're gonna do the work, it will be cheap!
eg: Shox.com has the best prices for bilsteins. It's been awhile, but i think price was approx $250/set of 4

Turbo tie rods can be bought off any magazine ad for approx $125./pr

If you don't already have it, the book "101 projects for your Porsche 911" by Wayne Dempsey would be a must for you! Check it out on PelicanParts.com or Amazon.com etc
Have fun!

Mike-

Thanks for the tips. Whaddya know about the short shift kit? Just wondering if it's even worth it, since I think it only reduces the throw by 10% as opposed to 20% in 85 and earlier. I'll probably do it anyway, since my shifting really needs help in the smoothness category.

Eric,
I didn't install a short shift kit for 3 reasons:
1)only 10% shorter shift like you said
2)it's harder on the tranny. The shorter shift length places more torque/force on the tranny, since the fulcrum is shorter.
3)It does nothing for smoothing out the shifting on our 915 tranny's

For smoother shifting, i'd do these in this order:
1) Change all shift coupling/bushings like John said
2) Use SWEPCO Transmission fluid. Others swear this alone will help w/ smoother shifting
3 Gated Shifter. Tho' this won't necessarily smooth out your shifting, it's supposedly pretty nice. Check it out: <a href="http://www.seinesystems.com/GateShift-1.htm" target="_blank">http://www.seinesystems.com/GateShift-1.htm</a>
4) Buy a '87 or newer 911 w/ G-50 tranny. (kidding).

Have fun
Mike

Eric,
So you want smoother shifting NOW?
Don't want to wait for all of those projects that will take days/weeks/months from now to complete?
OK, here's how to get smoother shifting TODAY:

Lift up the leather shift boot. Spray some Silicon lubricant into the shifting mechanism. Instant smoother shifting. It worked for me.

Talking

LOL. If only it could be that easy. The replacement bushings might wait til spring (hey, Chicago is COLD) but I'll give that spray idea a shot today and see what happens. It's such an obvious short-term fix that I hadn't even considered it.

Thumbs up

Let the madness continue!!!
I have a 1988 Cabriolet now and want to do alot of personal customizing on the car (nothing to deter value of course) when I get some free time.

I want to re-do the interior in mine and add a new steering wheel in addition to some aluminum pieces.
Before I do however, I need to replace the A/C hoses and get the A/C not to leak freon anymore.

WELCOME!!!
