Default Carrera DME failure????????

Carrera DME failure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to know what the failure rate is on them?? I mean just failing, not being jump started, chipped, water damage, just failing because of age.

I've been playing with Porsches pretty much since the 3.2 came out, and I can't remember of ever hearing one just fail, there was always another, out side reason. Need all the info that I can find, and nothing turned up on the search.

TIA

I don't know the rate, but I suspect that it is very rare.

I have heard of solder joints on the board cracking or giving up. But with a magnifying glass, a soldering iron, some solder, and some paitence you should be able to fix it.

This is a question Lorenb should be able to answer.

this is selfish of me 'cause I see BMX in your sig....I have an ABA NAG#3, district #1, gold cup #1, 9 year old girl who has 3 national wins this year and sits atop the leader board as we speak.

Try looking at the current chip thread and call Lorenfb at whatever his company is. The guy is short on friends and could use a call from you. He is the DME Guru, though you may have to hold your nose. I'll try to find a link for you...

Thanks guys, the only failures that I have seen is from bad chip installs & water, just trying to make sure that I'm correct on the fact that they don't fail on their own very often.

douglas bray, do you ride with her???

racerbvd, I have a pacemaker that keeps my heart out of A-fib and V-tac so no I don't ride I just fund and transport. I could have killed my brother when I found out he gave my circa '78 Mongoose W/tuffwheel II's to a drug rehab center. Bastard!

Default DME Failure

I had my DME fail about three years ago. One day while letting my Dad drive the car, after accelerating from a stop sign the car just shut down. We go out opened the engine lid, looked for anything loose, everything looked OK so I tried to start it and it fired right back up and ran fine. That night I drove the car about 100 miles back to my home and it shut down again, this time from a steady speed ( right in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge-Tunnel). I turned the switch off , waited a few minutes (ok 60 seconds) and then it started right up and made it home with no more problems. The next morning I tried to start it and no luck at all so I had to flat bed it to my local Porsche shop. They tapped the DME box with their hand and it fired right up. They then sent the DME off to be re-built and two days and $500 later, I was back on the road and have not had any problems since then.

Yeah, he's kind of harsh, especially when guys start talking about MSD but I guess his business is rebuilding Bosch units. Still, he IS abrasive.

Speaking of BMX, who remembers Ashtabula?

Yes, about 15 years ago on my 84 911. Was driving home one night from a friends. Just going down the highway normal speed ~60mph and everything just shut down.
Towed it home, and then to a shop, took pretty much a day to come to the conclusion it was the DME. Picked up a used one and it fired up.
Now it thinks it's 2 years younger :-) (DME from a 86).
Still have the old one some place, pack rat.

Sell it to a shop that fixes them, I am sure they will give you some money for it.

Equality, it googles as a county or park in Ohio. Did Harry Leary kill someone there after a race?
