I guess that's good for me because I purchased my 87 Guards Red Targa in Jan for substantially less. It has 71k mi.

Good for you! The reason that I posted this illustrates the possibility that the 911 market, which has seen gentle, reasonable gains over the last few years, might not end up getting hit like some segments of the collector car market that experienced meteoric gains. Much like Bakersfield real estate, the faster prices went up (and ours did!), the harder they might fall (thankfully we're still higher than '04 prices). Long hood cars experienced big gains, but nothing like Hemis in general, Cudas, 427 Vettes, Shelby anything, and others. Hopefully we only see a small, if any, reduction in the value of our '60s, '70s and '80s cars.

It is funny you (Mr. Z) bring up this issue. I have had many muscle cars but never found something that covered all bases. I tried a Sunbeam Tiger, 356, Corvettes, Boss 302 and a number of Mustangs. I even had a '71 911 S. By accident an old guy was selling his '86 coupe so I bought it...........BINGO! These cars are as close to the holy grail of cardom that I have found. I am a horrible cynic but not about these Carreras.........well O.K, the shifting on some of them is not so nice but "whata you gonna do?" The old guys '86 is long gone and I missed it so I found another. Hmmmm this does pose a problem, do I like the Carrera better than extra thick icing on a carrot cake? I don't know....I just don't know. The tech for the car keeps telling me how wonderful the SC is so now I feel compelled to drive a coupe while they are cheap. Tell me what kind of car you can build for 17K that will go to 140mph with forged engine internals and dead on steering? Oh' and brakes, holy smokes, those brakes. I am dumbfounded how cheap '84 thru '86 911s' are. Reminds me of sale day at Mervins.

Lets see-- do I want shares in Bear Stearns that sold today at $5, last Friday at $30, and were at $159 in the last 12 months or a 911?? The 911 does not loose 80% in value over the weekend or fall against the Euro/Yen/Pound/canadian dollar. Lock the garage and it is there the next day. Is it just a car, just the most fun car in the world to drive(affordable that is), way cool, or a new investment vehicle-- pun/joke/humor-- vehicle, investment, investment vehicle.

Jake:

I believe that J.P. Morgan purchased Bear Stearns for $2.00 per share over
the weekend. I didn't know they were at $159.00 only a year ago, and those
who purchased shares close to it's peak are probably ready to jump out
windows like they did in the late 20's. Here in Cleveland, they're saying that
National City bank ( NCB) is in the same type of trouble due to poor loans.
Purchase the Porsche and you'll enjoy it MUCH more!!!

Back to sales.

On Ebay a month ago a very nice(looking) 1983 911SC. Ice Green. Tan Interior. 65,000 miles. All records. All stock except for chain tensioners. Went for $24,xxx.

good cars will go for these prices. But most people who think they have good cars don't. And stock cars always creep up in value as the years go on.

Sales pet peeve, "all stock. Upgraded radio, rims, steering wheel, and tint." Ugh, that is not all stock.

I know people say that these cars are not investments, but when i bought mine I used what I had set aside as a new boat down payment. I was laid off work 6 months later. Now had I bought the boat it would have lost tons of value the moment I drove it off the lot. My 911 on the other hand is worth more now then when I bought it.
Another thing that drives resale value is color combos. Porsche has put together some weird combos in its time. I know the dark blue interior I have has a way of hiding its age.

Not to go completely off subject but as long as I own both I might as well say it here out of frustration ....now if only my 81 928s 5 spd - excellent condition, completely bone stock down to the radio and antenna, no upgrades what so ever and at 50k miles would appreciate a little.
