Default Non-R Track tire help...

Looking for help with tire recomendations.

My refrence is Kumo Victoracers on a 72 911 at 2200 lbs. I just bought a 85 Carrera 3.2 with Fuch 7 & 8 / 16's.

The local club events I want to run almost require I run a street tire with a ware rating of 201 or more. R tires are 100 and less.

I think I should be looking at 245/45's Rear and 225/45's or 50's on front. Can go to 205/225's if this gets me to a much scker tire that will make up for the loss in width.

What tires should I concider???

Any experance with Yokohoma AVS ES 100's or Toyo T1R's? They both have a ware rating of 280.

How can I expect this type of tire to act on autox or on 20 minite track runs.

Will the screech? Chunck?

Will it help to shave them?

Thank's in advance of any experance you can share.

Keith, "technically" you may be able to squeak out something like the Falken Azenis Sport (or, RT-615 now), which is a 180 TW, but IIRC qualifies at SCCA for a "street" tire (which is why I say "squeak", you have a leg to stand on). I have had these on my SHO track cars before, along with the V700 Victoracers. Watch the temps - the Azenis Sports (& I assume, their RT-615 replacements) increased pressures VERY much and VERY quickly - like 2 laps = 8-10psi increase in my case, and they got very slippery after crossing the threshold.

I have not run the T1-R, but did run the T1-S for streets & rains at Road Atlanta (pre-resurface). They were very grippy for a street tire, and gave audible feedback as you approached slip, but were not "noisy" per se unless you were pushing them (and then you do want feedback).

ES100s I've heard of circumferential splits appearing in between the middle rain channel bottoms when used on the track - be careful of this. Otherwise, they are a fairly decent street tire.

I will never use a BFG tire on the track again after running G-Force KDW tires... 1 blowout, 3 other cord breaks w/ cord sticking through the sidewall... bad news man.

EDIT: the 615 is a 200 TW now, the old Sports were 180's. Cool.

Ketih, I have the Yokohoma AVS ES 100's on my SC 83 205 in the Fornt and 245 in the Rear. I ran my 2nd tracking event 2 weeks ago with them and found them very good. Started with 31/35 cold tire pressure and they went to 36/39 after the sessions. Good grip and braking. These are my 2 cents from a novice to you.

I know a few people that have chunked up the Yokohama ES100's
- you may be in better shape with a light car.

x2 I currently run 205s and 245s and am looking forward to understeer on the track (I don't want to roll my fenders up front, I would have to w/ 225s)

I am currently looking very seriously at Michelin Pilot Sport Cups for my 87. 205 and 245.

I have heard good things about the Pilot Sp Cups.

ES100s are still around? It's an OK tire, nothing to write home about IMHO.

AVS Sports are much better, and even stood up to my 993 at stock weight on hot (95+ degree) days. I am also using them on my 2500lb SC ...nice and progressive tire that stands up to heat and wear very well.

Friend of mine is using the Azenis on his stock WRX ...he's heavier than the 993 and those tire seem to have served him well so far. Cheaper than Yokos, too!

Thanks all.

Will look into all recomendations and they are appricated.

I may be able to go down to a ware rating of 151 on the tires which may open up some more tires.

My last 911 was a 72S with rolled fenders that I put 7" Fuchs & 245/50/15's all around but it had stiff suspention and it was some time ago. It was very low, I would have to say, to low.

What is required to get the 245's under the rear end or 225's under the front w 7/5-16 fuchs and stock 85 Carrera suspention w sport shocks. I will lower but fear going to low with out stiffer springs.

I kind of like the idea of 225/45/16's in der front as I will not have to lower the suspention to much which and my retain more travel and keep bump steer down.

Thx....

For an SC-body forward, 245s in the rear is no issue whatsoever ...you could even go a bit wider if you have the wheels for it. For the front, 225/16 "can" fit without issue, but most I've talked to (as well as my own car) needed a tiny bit of fender rolling to accomodate 225s. For reference, I am lowered at maybe just below RoW height, with -2 deg camber, with a 22mm T-bar up front and still had to roll the left fender to avoid tire rub. It's not a big deal, mind you, but just so you're aware the possibility of needing to roll the lips exists.

Helpfull input!!!

I am currently concidering Kumo Esca MX's (UTQG 220) but they only come in 225 & 205's . What about 225's front and rear???

Also the Hankook's look good. Great price, lots of sizes. However, the ware index of 200 add's to my modification points and may put up a class in the club I am looking at.

Why are the 45/225's more work than the 50/225's (16" rims)?

Is this because the contact pach is wider?

My reasion for concidering the 45's is they have a wider patch of 8" compaired to 7.2" on the 50's or 55's. Also the diamiter is smaller (23.9" v 24.9") so the front will not have to be lowered (shock compressed) as much. This would give me more travel up front, more fender to tire space, add more camber when the inside strut is compressed in a turn (A arm angle), and reduce bump steer. That was my hope anyway.

Thx

Great.

Are you running 225/45/16's in the front of the car in your picture?

It looks great in the corner...
