Default 'Ask Pete' New series

i helped a buddy replace all the fuel lines at the weekend on his 73 targa S.
it went well and everythings good, but we found this little fellow pictured below while doing it, lurking unattached to anything just hanging around above the transmission. its rubber covered and sort of spongey material inside, and its sealed at both ends with rubber caps.
so pete - what is it? and where do we put it back? we're stumped!
thanks in advance!

This is a joke, right ?

I will be thinking about it but at first thought it's probably something that got thrown up from a tire and it belongs to someone else!

Cheers!
