Post Need a little help please. (long!)

Guys, i need some advice.

I'm in the market for a 993(my first pcar). However, whenever i see an 80s carrera, black on black late 80's carrera coupe, I can't help asking myself, should I get into one now? Maybe upgrade to a 993 later on? My mind on most days are set on searching for an early model 993 coupe. However, on some days when I'm on the web and end up seeing a late 80s carrera for sale, there I go again!

Maybe my emotions of wanting to get into a pcar is taking over Searching is fun but torturing at the same time;P if you know what I mean.

I have test driven a couple of my friends' late 80's carreras and they drove great. They look awesome too especially in black! I can't really tell which I like to drive better, 993 or late 80s carrera. I just know I love both. There are however a few concerns...although buying a late 80s carrera would be cheaper by about 10K+, I understand that it's a 13-15 year old car. Some stuff will have to be repaired/replaced. I would probably end up paying not exactly but a few K closer to an early 993's price after repairs and such. The ac some say is non-existent and I'm in pretty hot and humid territory when it comes summer.

My question is, would it make more sense to just wait and find the perfect 993? I mean, I would love to have both but that's not possible unfortunately. Should I get into a late 80s carrera and enjoy it while searching for the 993? I just can't decide. Btw, this car will not be a daily driver.

Thanks in advance!

-Huey

Am I experiencing the addiction? I haven't even bought my first pcar yet!

Patience Huey, patience. Wait until you find the perfect car. Don't "settle" for something that is less than exactly what you are dreaming of. If you are like me, you will regret buying the car you can find, rather than finding the car you want to buy.
That said, if you find a late 80's Carrera in good condition, you won't necessarily need to replace anything. I've owned my black '85 for going on four years now, it is decent, but not in great shape at 130Kmi. I drive it every day to work, autocross on weekends and have done three D/E's with the car. I have replaced the alternator, brake pads (twice), tires and a switch on the drivers seat. That's it.
Do I regret not waiting to find my ideal car? Yes. Enough to sell my baby? No. Someday she'll be silver.

Hi Huey: You might want to consider your comfort level as to how much money you want sitting in the garage?
I went from a Carrera to an SC several years ago (weekend cars) and I'm having just as much fun for less. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hi Huey
I agree with Bob f-s, early 911, same fun but for less money. To me the advantages the 993 offers regarding ride comfort and refinement is a trade off against the excitement you get when driving an early 911. Not that i'm knocking the 993, if i could afford it, i'd buy a 993 rs3.8 tomorrow.

The (standard) 993 is definately the better car for daily commuting (i.m.o) but not for seat-of-the-pants driving excitement. Plus i'm betting you'll lose a heap load more money at resale time on the 993, at least here in the UK you would.

Good luck whatever you choose! Regards Jon.

Have you driven a 993? Or a 964, for that matter? If you haven't, go forth and drive one -- that should help you decide.

Happy hunting

Todd,

Yes, i have driven a few 993's and a 964 once. The 964 doesn't appeal to me as far as look is concerned (just not to my liking), no offense to 964 owners.

Thanks

I got an e-mail from the local PCA in town (nashville, tn) regarding a member looking to sell a late 80's turbo. It was beautiful and low miles. Let me know if you want me to track down more info. I think he wanted $32, which sounded pretty good to me.

I have an 86' that's all black and a friend with a 993 that's black as well. I can't decide which I think is better looking. I plan to buy a 993 as well and keep my 86' 911. I don't know where you are looking but an 80's 911 should be far less money than a 993. About 15K at least? 80's 3.2 carreras are just a steal right now. An 80's car that's been serviced with records should need almost nothing done. I also can't imagine the 80's cars getting any cheaper. BTW, my A/C works great. 86' and later have bigger vents.

993? Get one with varioram.
Get a PPI with either. No reason to buy anything that's not just great condition. Prices to good right now.

I think they are two different fantastic cars.
