I am looking to purchase a 911 sc and was wondering which year was the most reliable. I will be using it as a daily driver. Would it be better to purchase a rebuilt one?

Any help would be appreciated.

All years of SC have a bullet-proof engine and everything else pretty much was bullet-proof too. Just get the one in the best condition that you can find. And try posting this in the 911 board, not the recycling board!

All things being equal, get the last version available - '82 & '83 models were particularly good. Not sure what you mean by rebuilt (engine? - only if it was needed, done properly & well-documented), but it is best to find one w/ moderate mileage, a good ownership history (records, no accidents) & in fairly stock condition. Avoid early "CA-only" models. Get a PPI by an expert in these models. Buy Pete Zimmerman's book. & welcome to RL 911 forum, where people are pretty nice, usually.

just kidding .. all SCs as stated are bullet proof , can't go wrong with any 3 litre if you pass a good PPI ( pre purchase inspection ) .

You can get a mileage history, damage history, and recent ownership title changes for the 1982 and 1983 from carfax. It has to be a 17 digit vin # and the early SC is not 17 digits so you can not see the history of the car. I looked at one car a few months back that had 80,000 miles that were not showing on the car and several more recently with damage, salvage, 25,000 miles missing, or wrong vin # on the title---all discovered not by the information from the ad or from the owner, but by me doing a carfax.------ That being said, the rebuilt engine thing is scary even if you have the history and ownership records. Reference was made above about Zimmerman's car for sale. You might want to check it out to avoid unpleasant and costly(as in $1000 plural) surprises.

Hi Rich,

You already heard it. 1978-83 had their differences, but as for reliability, the best one is the one with the best PPI and maintenance log. Everything else is secondary. With $10K+ for engine and $4K+ for a tranny properly rebuilt *with* parts and machine labor documented (standard shop rates mind you, not DIY), you are practically buying just the drivetrain and getting the chassis and interior for free. So do your homework and get a proper PPI from a well-respected indy shop.
...then post pics as that is a requirement 'round these parts

I've been told 1980 and on. Best bet: find one in great shape first. Worry about which year later. The diffrences are somewhat minimal. If you're really picky (like me) you'll pay particular attention to 1982 and 1983 year models.
