Rich:

Welcome!

Please add your location to your profile. No matter which year you choose, do not buy without a thorough pre-purchase inspection (PPI) from an independent mechanic.

Good luck!

Paul.

If I were from a state where emissions copliance was not an issue, I would be looking for an 81 or newer Euro model. Very much what a 911 is all about.

Indeed it is!

I have an '82 SC RoW coupe, no A.C., no radio, 3.0 Litre boxer 6 sound system w/Dansk 2 in / 2 out speakers fed by SSI's (sets off car alarms ), 223 hp, 9.8:1 cr, Mahles (not ALL SC's had them), Fuchs 7s & 8s x 16 shod w/205/55 & 245/45 tires, Bilstein Sports all around, 26 mm rear t-bars, strut bar, Carrera chain tensioner, Turbo tie rods, 2540 lbs (11.29 lbs/hp ), WEVO shifter/coupler/engine/trans mounts.

I drive it every single day, whether I have any place I must go or not. It has been trouble free (of course it only has 197 k miles on it), starts right up on the coldest morning, insists that I take it to redline at least several times every time I drive it and goes like a bat outta hell!

It is rude, crude, visceral and raucous. It verges on being an evilly antisocial little mechanical monster.

I freakin' love it!

+1 for the 1983 MY...

Especially if you can get a late model year car that has the "New" 3.2 litre engine case...

Best 911 that I have owned, and I have owned a few...

Yes, I miss her... but she went to a great home!

And that would be a Carrera, no? If memory serves, the 3.2 Carrera debuted in my '83. I don't believe an SC ever had any engine but the 3.0.

The 3.2 liter engines appeared in the MY84 cars through MY89. They were externally labelled "Carrera." The 1978-1983 model year cars were all 911SC cars with the 3.0 liter engines. ALWAYS buy the newest one of the group you're interested in,--in this case the 1983. Since Pete's car is a 1982 (by the VIN with "CS" in the number) then you are probably good to go with that car. The 1982 and 1983 911SC cars were for all intents and purposes identical.

1984 on the 3.2 engine. Just like the one that I have with about 43,000 miles on it now. I have only driven it about 1800 miles since I had the speedometer and odometer refurbished and the internals cleaned and lubed, then calibrated. This was done in 2003, so I guess putting only 1800 miles on it in just 4-1/2yrs, it should last me till I throw a rod or blow up a pump, then the car will still have maybe 50,000 miles on it then. The sad part about it, I keep getting closer to the jump of point, due to my health, and let some fresh blood drive and covet it for many years tom come. I might have to be thinning the squad of collector cars down, being my herd has more collector cars in it that just i can drive, I am the only one here O -well, I guess that it will have to do something Maybe take some to the. So, whn I get ready to sell of some of the 11 cars that I have here now, I will let the boards know first, somewhat like getting first option. All of the sales will be in cash. Talk to ya later, Tony.

What was meant by this is that about the last third of '83 SC production got '84 Carrera engine cases - in other words they were built with only an oil drain plug and the sump plate/screen was deleted. And yes, the last SC engines were still 3.0 liter...

Hi Dan,
I am going to wholeheartedly disagree with this, bud. So the 98 is the best 993? The 94 is the best 964? The 89 is the best 3.2 Carrera? Did you really mean what you wrote?

Sorry, a sweeping statement like this ignores a whoooole lot of other variables, chief of which is regular maintanence. Not to mention on SC-vintage cars, we are talking about a 25+ old car with typically high mileage and/or rebuilt drivetrain-related goodies. Add to this the vast differences among owners regarding general care of the car as a whole. I am more inclined to echo your sentiments for a 996 or any fairly young model. But when the years and miles tick by, there is LOTS to weigh when determining the "best" one.

Just my opinion, mind you, but the primary consideration for most any car, especially 911s (which are very robust, enjoy drivetrain longevity, but are very expensive to rebuild), are maintenance, records which attest to it, and a competent PPI. Anyone who has spent any kind of money on 911 care (DIY or, heaven forbid, regular shop rates) knows that "fixing" these things is far more costly than preventative care-as-you-go. And that much trouble (read $$$) can be hidden from view if one considers only the last year of a model cycle. Again, all IMHO.

I am sure he meant something like this....If you had 2 stock cars that have had only the basic maintance done on them, and in the same basic condition...the newer year would be the one to buy. Like the 83 sc had a few improvements over the pre 82 sc's. Just like every other 911 model...Porsche made improvements.

I am sure most people would agree that a nice 78SC is better than a crappy 83SC. Just as a nice 78SC is better than a crappy 89 Carrera....etc etc.

i think the point is all things being equall by the newer one .... except for 993s .. cause you might be prepared to live without the varioram to not be aggrivated with air injection issues on the 96 and on ..
