With the lighter rearend the 912's can be driven really fast on track. The point was to try and offer a cheaper 911 for more people. Porsche actually sold quite a few.
Now as far as putting a V8 into one....I see no dif than putting a Subaru engine in one. Technically not a Porsche anymore, because the heart and soul of the car is its engine.

looks wrong!
looks short on total modification to match up to the 300 hp? not really a monster at all! mine has almost 600 chp in a dart all aluminum 434 sbc with 930 4 spd... when well done the swap is costly but very satisfying for an ole hotrodder like me!!!

Typical 'LA-LA' car. Just like 'LA-LA' women: start with a good thing, then take a surgeon's blade to it (Plastic Surgery) , and who knows what you'll end up with ....
Terrible destruction of a once-nice 912. Too bad :-(
Also: great to drive hard; but really hard to turn over in the morning ... and I'm not talking about the car.

The reason why so many people think it's so wrong is because you're thinking about it backwards. Hot rodders don't start with the car, they start with the engine and say, "what kind of engine do I want to build?" "How much HP do I want to make?" So once the engine is built, then you find a good car to put it in. Your choices could be a Dart, Chevelle, whatever, but then it occurs to you, "hey, what about a Porsche!" So again, it's kind of a compliment to Porsche.

It's either that or leave for a year and then have to do all this catching up when I get back. That sounds like too much work...

It's like my father told me in high school when I shoved a 289 V8 w/4 spd into a Pinto-
"Son, no matter how fast it is, it's still a Pinto!"
In this case you can read into his wisdom which ever side of the fench you want to be on.....

With some race prep I'm sure its quick but stock it was a big step back both from the 911 and previous (lighter) 356. A 4c, 90bhp, 1.6l on a 911 body just doesn't do it for me just like a dino 208 doesn't work in my book. Cheaper versions just don't work for certain cars unless they are followed by the letters CS and do without expensive options (see 968) IMHO.
