Student seeks reassurance from inner circle mid-valve adjustment
I have removed the distributor cap and wires. Unbolted and poped off the intake covers. The inside of the heads are shinny and clean. Now I have to go to my brother-in-law's birthday party......
1. Why were the gaskets all puffy?
2. Why did the washers split into two parts?
3. Does this get me closer to the inner circle?
4. Lots more questions, but pressed for time?
5. Does the .040 gauge with the hook shown in the book work best?

2) They have a split personality (ya, I know, that was a bad one)
3) If you are talking about the inner circle of your cylinder than yes, other than that; no.
4) Don't get too hungover at the party that way you can work on it on sunday.
5) As you have no doubt read in other threads it is a big debate as to whether the classical or the backside method is easiest/best/most convenient/coolest/most hardcore/quickest...etc. You will have to choose for yourself. In my opinion most people spend too much time thinking of this and not enough time driving.
I have done it and my engine has yet to explode. Same with Oshin, Shannon, Pete...and many many more. Do it, drive it, enjoy!

......So I drive to Corona (no it's not a beer), crack the code on my Brother-in-law's computer, and you guys are already out of control.
Does getting it back togeather and running get me into the inner circle?

I don't understand what this inner circle thing is. When I finished mine(still don't know if it's done 'right') no one came around to welcome me to some circle. I don't think it's a cult or some sort of frat house initiation. Of course I could always be mistaken. Maybe sorority girls will come by and shower you with congratulations when you are done.................

An .040 feeler gauge would not give you good results adjusting valves. Even with a fancy hook holder.
Try a .004". That's 4 thousandths of an inch, not 40 thou.

2.7 I think you have stumbled on to something here. It is no wunder why I am not yet in the inner circle. The Zim Master just hinted at it....big dif between .040 and .004......No wunder I couldn't get it in. It was 10X to large. Not use to that. (STRONGLY EDITED)

Master Zim, I have spent the morning in and out of a partial sleep state thinking of my next move. With as little space as there is in the heads I really don't want to try adjusting valves 'till I get the right tool. I'm gonna go put the car up on stands drain the oil and take the lower covers off. Unless the kids have other plans.......
