Plea for help viewing 1980 911 SC Targa at McKenna Porsche

Here's something I learned after the fact (buying my 911 cab in Kansas City). Take off the front turn signal side lenses (orange lenses) and check the reflectors. The reflectors in my set were all corroded which may give you a good indication of the history / weather exposure. Everything else was clean. I also look under the rubber trim that runs under the doors - check toward the end of the doors before the rear wheel well to see if the factory bar code label is there. I try to check as many panels as possible for the UPC labels as that will give me a good idea of what has been replaced or painted over - assuming you are being told that the paint is original (as was the case with my 89 911).

When I purchased my 79 SC back in 1993, I neglected to do this type of "roll up the sleeves" investigation. While trying to get everything clean during a wash months later, I took off the rear tail light and found rust - and more than I expected. To this day, I am still kicking myself for not looking closer at the car during the PPI phase...
Good luck!

Douglas,
Thanks for the info about the door pocket. McKenna have the car on hold for me pending the PPI that Callas Rennsport have agreed to do for me (a bit pricy, but I think that it is worth the money).

Many thanks to everyone for your help with this car. I had the PPI done by Callas Rennport (Excellet service from them) and after a telephone conversation with Tony and receiving his report I realised tha car was not what I was after. PM me if you would like more details on the PPI.
Back to looking for that special car. Thanks again

Wow, now I really feel dumb. I was asking because mine has the same thing. After seeing yours I had to ask. I was not aware of a vin cover so primitive on a Porsche...I thought for sure one of the prior owners of my car had done a McGiever patch.

flatsix, now you know you don't have a grey market car. here in California grey market VIN's are usually just a metalic sticky stuck on the door frame. You have the real deal.
