Default Mr. Paul Frere

Just read on the Pelican site of Paul Frere's passing yesterday. Sad day for the Porsche fraternity.

Oh, that is terrible! Check this link for more biographical info:
http://www.planetlemans.com/2008/02/...17-23-02-2008/

Paul Frere, in addition to being a great race car driver, was also a great automotive journalist, and was the European editor for Road & Track magazine for more than 40 years. He was a huge 911 fan, he did the first road test of the 901/911 for Road & Track when the car first came out, and has written about every iteration of 911 since. Mr. Frere also wrote a definitive book on the 911, the Porsche 911 Story, which was updated many times as new 911 generations came out. He was also a big Ruf fan and supporter, and appears in the "Fazination Plus" video. He was a great driver/writer and will be missed, but at 91 he surely lived a full and rich life!

The best thing, of many, about Mr. Frere was that he was always positive when writing about our beloved 911s. He understood the cars and their peculiarities, and his writing reflected that. He wrote/published the "Porsche 911 Story" in 1976. One only needs to know that Dr. Ferry Porsche wrote the foreword for that book, and stated that Mr. Frere's background of engineering, race driving and journalism made him the right man for the job.

Very sad indeed. A great writer and an even greater driver. Very rare to find a combination of such driving skills with a real technical understanding of both the engineering side of things and racing skills. A real loss of someone who's played a major part in the history of Porsche.

He will be missed greatly. A real reference point and guide to the world of 911's.

A great racer, author, and journalist who experienced, witnessed, and wrote about some of the
greatest moments in automotive history. Godspeed Mr. Frere.

Sad - another racing icon from the past is gone. Having recently read one of his road tests in R & T, I marveled at how he was still at it after all these years.
