Question Gauges

When I purchased my 84 911 the fuel gauge sticks at the half way mark and if I wrap on it with my knuckle it'll move to show proper fuel level and then get stuck again. Now my quartz clock isn't keeping accurate time. Is all this as simple as taking them apart and spraying wd40 in there to clean them up to get them working properly?

I'd be more willing to suspect a poor ground.
