Were there door and hood VIN decals in 1979?
There is a 79 911SC with 31,000 original miles, but I do not see any VIN decals like my 1988 has. Am I missing something, of is this a re-spray?

I am not 100% certain, but there should be a MFR's plate in the driver door jamb, and the cars were normally delivered with a sticker (this had the VIN, option and paint codes) under the hood.
On a nearly 30 year old car I would expect some kind of paintwork, but it would be best to have the body checked with a paint thickness gauge.

a '79 ought to have a VIN plate on the driver's side windshield post (the "A-pillar"), on the door jamb (w/ other info, like EPA/DOT conformance) & on a plate in the trunk (not on underside of hood, but iirc, afixed to the chassis ). the standardized 17 digit VIN did not start until '81.

No stickers came on that era 911 under the hood (trunk). The data plates were in there, along with along hte B-pillar, but nothing stuck with options, for example, in those days.

Thank you. The seller's wife mentioned the front of the car was repaired a few years ago, which the seller forgot to remember to tell me after he said the paint is all original.
Found a 1977 911S targa in my search. Nice, original one owner car to boot.
