Default Clueless

Hello my friends, I don't have a clue as to the correct tool kit for my recently aquired '84 (pictured) 911. I will consult my books but would like your opinion. The fellow (out of state) claimed the kit was present but is only half complete and I am not sure the plastic folding holder is correct either. It was not his fault as I could tell he was not a Porsche guy. A picture would tell it all. When I go on Ebay I see lots of tool kits and the descriptions are all over the map such as "tool kit '75 thru '89". Now I'm no genius but how can the kit be the same for all of those years and be correct? This is my garage queen so I want a nice one but I don't want to mortgage the house to get it. Sorry for any mispelled words but this site wants me to download a spelling program, I don't trust stuff that is free, there is always a catch. Regards

Judging from what I saw in my tool kit the majority of the tools seem to be standard off the shelf tools. The one thing I would ensure is that you have the correct pulley holder and and big lug wrench so you can change belts if you have too. (of course the spare belt as well)

If you want a authentic period correct tool kit that is another story. They do seem to fetch a high price on ebay, more than I would be willing to pay for one. Of course, mine is certainly not a garage queen.

Here is a link to the parts diagram of what I think is the correct tool kit from pelican. Hopefully it helps.

Found the following photo of an '84 toolkit. My car is in storage at at another garage--but not too far from where I live--so I could get a better photo of mine, if needed. Just might be a couple days.

The "tool kit '75 thru '89" in a way does make sense, although I can't say for sure it's true. There are a lot of similarities between the 3.0 liter and 3.2 liter cars that cover that range. Kits can be had on eBay or check some of the recyclers in Panorama--Oklahoma Foreign, CarsInc, DCAutomotive. They shouldn't be too hard to find or too expensive (of course, I'm comparing "expensive" to what it would cost me to find an original kit for my '68which, unfortunately, I don't have--and would be BIG bucks)

This helps, thankyou. I see some tool bags have an angled section where the tools are placed while other tool bags are straight across.

I have an '84 3.2 that carries it's original tool kit. Here is the list of tools:

19mm lug nut wrench
24mm lug nut style wrench for holding fan belt pulley nut
Spanner wrench for holding fan in order to change fan belt
Spark plug wrench
10mm allen wrench
6mm allen wrench with rubber boot for loosening battery hold down bolt.
Screw driver handle in yellow plastic stamped with "Made in W Germany"
26mm in length Philips screw driver insert for above handle
14mm in length Philips screw driver insert for above handle
18mm in length flat blade screw driver insert for above handle
Pliars stamped with "Germany" & "Hapewe"
Fuse Kit
12mm in length, 10mm diameter metal tube (I can't remember what this is for...)
Spare fan belt
5 open end wrenchs in the following size combos:
19mm/17mm
15mm/14mm
13mm/12mm
11mm/10mm
9mm/8mm
All open end wrenches are marked "Selected Special-Steel West Germany"

The tool kit pouch has pockets on the inside which slant downward to the right. The left side is about 14mm in height and 10mm on the right.

Hope this helps,

Jay

Jay,

Thanks for the detailed descriptions on some of the tools. I've seen two additional items listed on most kits: Tow Hook tool and small package of fuses (goes with the pliars).

No connection at all to the seller, but I happened to notice this on eBay today. Even if you're not interested in purchasing, there is good detail in the photos...

That's one of the cleanest I have ever seen. It appears to be complete too.

I agree about the tools being really clean, but it is missing some items (lug wrench, pully wrench, 1 open end wrench, tow hook).

The way the flap is folded, it could be hiding stains or tears - but could be just an innocent arrangement.

It seems I read somewhere you can still order new tools from Porsche. Can anyone confirm this?

good info here - does anyone know if the pulley wrench for an '86 is the same as other years in the carrera series?

I need one...I think that 's the one tool that not easily replaceable if you are "out of town ' and have a problem...

Yes, the fuse kit is omitted from my tool kit list. Thanks for that correction and I've edited my list for the archieve searches in the future.

However, the pre 964 tool kits did not come with a tow hook. There is nowhere to attach a tow hook on a stock 911 (pre '89/'90).

They are the same.

The factory sparkplug socket is excellent, and should be viewed as an important component too.

You'd think that cheesy looking spark plug thingy would be useless, but it works exceptionally well for changing the plugs.
