That will be your battery overcharging.

Fix the problem, before the battery explodes and sends acid shooting all over.
Happened to me once in an old Celica. Wasn't pretty.

It can also come from the exhaust, when a cat. converter is contaminated, or fuel mix is way off. You did not mention the car, or where you are located, so I don't know if yours even has one. When it does that, it is discharging hydrogen sulfide along with the other exhaust fumes. It can also be charging related to your battery, maybe you have a voltage regulator overcharging you battery, as mentioned already. Good luck!! Tony.

...hook up a volt meter to your car ( any 12v line will do ) see where your 12 v is sitting. I would say you are spiking. This is such a common problem with the older 911s that I have a permanently mounted voltmeter. A damaged alternator/ regulator can :

1. boil your battery destroying it ( the sulpher smell )
2. spill out into the battery box , destroying it
3. Damage the electronics in your car ( beware if you have a DME car. )

Although it could be the exhaust I would assume electrical and work from there ( assume worse case as it will help you in the long run . )

joey: "ice" is correct, your symptom is a classic alternator/regulator problem, especially if you have a car that uses an internal regulator ('82/83 SC & '84> C3.2). Please heed his cautions...

my car is an 87..the alternator is 20k old...i do have a steve wong chip...the smell is pretty rotten,then it goes away..its not a regular thing...checked the battery,all looked fine..thanks,j

It's great to see a piano player with a sense of humor. Car needs to be running.....you have to measure the output of the alternator/regulator as it is putting voltage INTO your battery. Your battery can only take so much, then it's the job of the regulator to cut off the flow of electricity. It if doesn't, then the battery is overcharged and boils....that's when you get the smell of sulphur dioxide....rotten eggs.

Hopefully it's just the regulator...cheaper than an alternator.

like you said it only happens sometimes so the regulator only sticks sometimes. Still needs to be replaced or taken apart and cleaned/ lubed

i went through this in november.

the first hint of a problem was a bouncing tacho. my initial though was "voltage regulator". but the prob was intermittent so when i tested the voltage it measured correctly.

then on a spirited drive one day i got the rotten egg smell (and i hadn't had kidney beans the night before!)

so the voltage reg was replaced as too was the battery
