Post Brey-Krause harness guide bar for Targa...

I'm hoping to locate a used B-K harness guide bar for my 81SC Targa. For those of you that have them installed, have you noticed any increased stiffness, and thus less flex, while on the track?
Thanks in advance...

I have a B-K harness guidebar in my '84 Carrera. It looks and works great. I have no scientific proof, but it seems to reduce body flex (along with the camber truss in trunk) while driving on the track.

With regard to your question on increasing the stiffness of your chassis by installing a harness bar, I can give you a free professional opinion. I am a Structural Engineer (whoopie). If you are using one of the common design bars that links between the two shoulder belt mounts, the answer is a big no. By only picking up two points that are symetrical about the centerline of the car you have no mechanical advantage, except in the case of a side impact at the doors of the car, at the "B" pillar. For bending stiffness of the chassis, between the wheel axle lines, and especially torsional bending about the centerline of the car, these two mount points (B-pillar shoulder belt mounts) offer near zero advantage. They are "soft points" in this sense. Thus by linking the two together all you do is put two soft points in phase with each other. To summarize...

The "B" pillar is soft for a coupe, and even more so for a Targa, with respect to increasing chassis stiffness via a two point mount cross spanning harness bar.

The BK harness bar for the Targa is very different than their model for the coupe. It has four mount points.

I'd also be interested in hearing whether this configuration would improve stiffness in a Targa.

Mike,
Where do the other two links mount to? What kind of mount do they use (monoball? single bolt? multi-bolt?). Do the main mounts use the typical pick-ups at the shoulder harness belt pivot points? I'll give you an answer.
