1965-1973 question ?
Long wheel base and Short wheel base 911's.
What does this mean (i have seen cars advertised) ? I thought all 65-73 911 chasis for the most part were the same.
thanks for any info

The 65-68 were sligntly (1.5"?) shorter between the front and rear wheels. You can see the difference at a glance by looking at the torsion-bar covers (that round hole/cover just fw'd of the rear wheels). 1969 and after have a wider space before/after the hole.
You will notice a ride difference, panels are more difficult to find and/or customize.

Here's a site with some excellent writing on the early 911 models, the differences between the years, even opinions on which of the early years is the better car. Plus a good pics section you can look at, see what each year looks like. Have fun! http://www.early911s.com/

"The 69, 70 and 71's also have a shorter wheel base than the 72+ cars, but longer than the 68- cars."
Sorry, I beg to differ. Only the pre-'69 911s have the short wheelbase. Every 911, from '69 on has the same, longer wheelbase dimension.

the original 911 wb was 2211mm. in '69 it went to 2268 mm. in '72/73 (depending on your source), that was further extended (via different rear trailing arm & pickup points) to 2272mm. stayed that way through the close of the 993s... sources: Frere's "911 Story" & "911 Red BooK".

You can change the wheelbase to the long wheelbase but the shocks will interfere with the towers and you will have to make new trailing arm mounts or take a torsion tube center section out of a later car and splice it in. This conversion is usually not worth the effort. or.....

Now that's ^^^^ more like it, but I think I stay a little more docile (for now ) To me the conversion is worth it since 1) the parts are free (thanks bro) 2) I don't like the looks of the short wheelbase with it's longer over hang, 3)I wanna redo the rear flares anyway as well as change to a fiberglass Ruf style rear bumper and 4)My plans are to progressively build this thing in to a monster so the longer wheelbase is a must from a handling standpoint. Besides I get this evil grin on my face everytime I get to play with metalworking tools especially cutoff saws and tig welders I recently built solid motor mounts for my bosses project a TVR 2500M that where putting an '88 Ford 2.3l turbo into (and no I couldn't convince him to put a smallblock ford in it like the factory offered) by the time I was finished his reply was "you really get off on this kind of thing don't ya!"
