HRE makes one that is as close as you'll get in a larger 17" wheel. Here's a link: http://www.hrewheels.com/Car/340Series/big311.htm

The other manufacturer of them (like HRE, they take Fuchs centers and put on new rims) is Lindsey Racing.

Just call me the old "Bubble Burster". Advise you be real careful when selecting wheels. I just attended a Tech Session from Kinesis...we went through the various things you want to look for in a wheel. Primarily, you want strength, and under impact, the wheel will bend, not break, nor come apart.

From an esthetic viewpoint, I love the Lindsey Wheels..in the early 90s, some chaps in SoCal were doing the same wheel, cutting up Fuchs 6" wheels for the centers, drilling the appropriate number of holes (How many is correct?) and mounting up BBS inners and outers. If I had a pre 964 Porsche car, would I install them as much as they appeal to me, probably not. Here is why.

In my humble opinion, I want wheels on my car from the most reputable companies such as Porsche, BBS, HRE, Kinesis, Speedline and a few others. They have passed the ultimate test...people have crashed their cars with these wheels, and the wheels have stayed together, absorbed some of the energy of the crash, a good thing. If I were to go much further off brand than above, I simply wouldn't feel confident in the wheels.

As an example, Kinesis installs 40 bolts to hold their wheels together. This 40 bolt design came about when Kinesis's new owner and staff re-examined the design of the wheels, and re-visited some of the failures that the early Kinesis wheels had experienced, corrosion, etc. I am not saying that any early Kinesis wheels failed...they simply didn't wear that well. One of the things that needed changing was the bolt pattern. 20 bolts wouldn't cut it in their opinion, they went to 40. This has worked out well for them and their customers. Kinesis wheels, and many others can be ordered with the proper offset, so so spacers are not needed. Some feel the use of spacers is not the best approach.

If you have the space in the wheel well, and you are running a 78 to 89 SC or Carrera, those 9" rears and 8" 944 Fuchs wheels are a sweet combination, and no wheel that I know of is any stronger than a Fuchs wheel. Porsche's OEM supplier received awards for the forging process. According to Kinesis, Fuchs wheels would be simply too expensive to manufacure and market today.

And finally, chroming wheels. Urban Legand has it that the chroming process can actually weaken a wheel. This I have heard...I could probably dig up the facts...but it is late.

What you see on race car wheels is polished wheels, seldom if ever chroming. I have had my wheels polished and clear coat powder coat resulting in 0 maintenance. I had the work done by Al Reed Polishing in Anaheim, CA...epic work!

I am passing on my experience and hope it helps.

Best regards,

Martin

HRE and Lindsey both use essentially the same design, and charge about the same amount.

HRE's:

(I agree that Al Reed is excellent, by the way.)
