Default What should I offer? 1980 911 targa SC

This car has been sitting outside under a car cover for 4-5 years. the owner states it ran when he tried to do a valve adjustment himself and got lost, then never fixed it. The motor is clearly missing parts. see photo...

The exterior is in good shape, no visible rust anywhere.

The interior is imaculate except for the overwhelming smell of mothballs ..haha

it has 94,000 original miles.

The only thing Im really concerned with is the motor. Even if it did run 4-5 years ago at the time of storage, can it be saved after sitting that long?

It only looks like you are missing an air filter, cover, and heater hose.

First question is do you have $20,000 that you can live without? It's not gonna cost you that much up front really, but if you get the sickness like some of us it could really cost you. You may be able to pick the car up for $6,000-$10,000. lets say it's all do-it-yourself stuff we walk you thru it's gonna be cheap.

air filter 20
Battery 200
valve cover gaskets 50
spark plugs 40
spak plug wires 140
distributor cap and rotor 60
oil change and filter 60

I wunder if you could take it to a shop for a PPI without it even running? Even if it it were $300 for a PPI I'd pay the money just for the fun of working on it. But I'm weard. What part of the country do you live? You may be able to come out smelling like roses....

What should I offer........

The "cheap" Porsche can be the most expensive toy you ever buy.
IF someone gave you the car for free.......
You could easily spend upward of $12K going through the engine. Then again you COULD be LUCKY and it doesn't need much -
You could spend a few grand on a new tranny - you could be lucky and it's fine.
You could spend a few thousand on the suspension...
You could get lucky and it not need much -

So - you are looking at a P car -
If your serious - and I gather by the new membership you are not familiar with the mechanics of these cars....

PLEASE GET A PPI FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be the best money you will ever invest on any used Porsche
(with the exception of a good book "101 projects" to get you familiar with the car)
It is quit often the best savings to buy a known car with records for more money - and just might save you from all kinds of heartache and tossing good money after bad.
My 2c worth.....

Thanks Doug,

I live in Va. and the owner is in the military, home on leave and really just wants to get this thing out of his parents yard. It's not really for sale per say, We had a windy day last week and it took the cover off so I stopped ing to see if they wanted to sell it. I have seen it there for years just did not know it was a porsche under there.

He's in the $6,000 range but I think I can flash 5 in cash at him and take it..

may be a good fiind huh?

Va is a good place for a Porsche. I fell in love with a DP935 (all fiberglass 911 turbo slant nose targa) in Fairfax when I was 19 and wanted one ever since. So I pulled the trigger a year ago and have nere had so much fun. Look for a Porsche web site for NoVa called something like dorkifus . not sure if that is it. even if it's a total loss can part it out for $5,000. I say take more pictures and wave the $5K figure at him.

gotta go drive my car, but I'll be back.

Yes - the motor sitting for years normally doesn't hurt the inside to bad...
Can you turn a wrench? Do a valve adjustment yourself? Squirt marvel mystery oil in the spark plug holes and move her back and forth a bit?
I'd jump on a rust free 911 at $5k - but then again I'm crazy too......

Without more info and pics of the car it would be really hard to put a price on it. Hard to get a proper PPI done on the car if it does not even run. For all we know...even it it was running it may only be worth the 6k there asking. I would definitely do more homework on these cars before spending any cash.

Hell you can tell they did not take care of it when it was running....it has a qt of penn in the engine bay and he used a Fram oil filter.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I am pretty handy with cars and there is not too much I cant do to a car. Although I have never touched a Porsche.

When I asked what he wanted he Stated " I dont know, maybe $6,000" hence the reason I think I can show him less and take it home.

I'll snap a few more pics tomorrow and post for all to have a look.

all the parts that Doug saw missing are in the trunk aswell.

I say $3000. What I payed for mine in "unknown" sitting for two years in a garage condition. Plus I got a Bronco II in the deal.

I smell timing chain problem.

If it was a coupe there would be a lot of value in the tub itself. Targa? Not so much.

Are you this devious? Kick back to the parents to get them to lean on him to get the "eyesore" out of their yard.

Mussberger, Why do you think think it will have a timing chain problem?

what do you want the end result to be? If you're looking for a parts car, might be a good buy but impossible to tell without more pictures. If you think you're going to get it to be a daily driver, you're likely looking at a lot of money. You would be much better off finding a $10-12k car that is in pretty decent shape. You'll get North of $10-12k in a hurry trying to fix it up, if it's even worth it. That engine looks like it's going to need to be opened. I don't buy the valve job story.

I want to use this car as a weekend driver/ second car. I have always wanted a porsche and i really need a hobby to get me out of my home office. I was hoping to pick this thing up, work on it a few months and get it running by summer.

I know the motor looks like sh*t. Just looking for some input from you guys who know what it may take.

Looks like it wil need a bit of work.

I wonder what other type of work the car needs, brakes, clutch, electricals., transmisson, struts are?

Also, remove the battery and see if there is any rust since the car has been sitting for so long.

Have yoy looked underneath for rust?

John
