Why in the world should a garden-variety Sachs clutch kit for a modest little SC cost sooooo much??!!!!!

It's even worse when you can get a whole kit and a lightweight FW for a VW for less than a 930 clutch disk.
It's truly more expensive than it needs to be.

I can't tell from your post what you paid, but if you buy direct from Dial-A-Clutch, the cost is for an 82 SC is$706 for a LuK, and $555 for a Daikin. I can't speak for the 911, but LuK is OEM for my 2000 M5, and the cost of my clutch from Dial-A-Clutch was 1/2 the cost of the local dealer for the exact same product made in the exact same factory.

On the flip side, my old SHO clutches were ~$220 from Ford (my jobber cost), where the Clutchmasters Stage 3 setup was close to $700-800. Of course, the $700 clutch was in 2 supercharged cars of mine and ended up in my current ride, car #3. Yes, the same physical clutch. The disc is fine, the pressure plate's on its last legs now.

Exactly. Precisely. WTFreak!!! A "Sachs" should be a Sachs, regardless of the application. Oh well, it's the price of admission. You'd think I'd have been used to it as an owner of two but frankly, I haven't spend much on either of the cars that I thought was "out of line" ...but this clutch has got me a bit miffed. I just can't wait until the 993 one needs replacement ...guess I'll have to take out a 2nd mortgage.

Hi Edward:

Two things conspire to make these prices seem rediculous:

1) Manufacturing volume. All of the other examples are made in several hundred thousand quantities; Porsche stuff is made in the hundreds and are relatively slow movers, nowadays.

2) Currency. This affects parts are made in Europe and the prices are adjusted for the current exchange rates when each parts run gets shipped to the US. Check the exchange rate today and you'll see what I'm taking about as this affects everything, not just overpriced clutch kits. $1.43/Euro as of this morning.


Given how abruptly Sachs has discontinued some limited production clutch kits for cars newer than yours, I'm just thankful that we can GET these components to keep keep these cars on the road.

Instead of paying steep pemiums for clutch and brakes I used to have my antique Mercedes parts resurfaced for very little cost in Ft. Lauderdale. I paid $4 per brake shoe!

By the way, I've heard my Kevlar 911 clutch was discontinued by the manufacturer (tho I can't remember who made it as I sit here using my PDA phone to post)

Any Kevlar clutches out for my 915 trans if I ever need it replaced?

Thanks for the reality check, Steve. Makes sense on both counts ...even if it does hurt the wallet. And in the grand scheme of things, it really is better to have the parts readily available than not at all (I used to own an Alfa which I loved for many yeeears ...but getting parts, ugh!). All right, I'll stop whining ...it's so unbecoming a 911 owner
