Previous owner has no knowledge of previous title, etc. Thanks for the info.

Dave,

Carfax shows that as a SALVAGE title issues in Il in 1988... sorry man..
If the thing is still rockin 20 years later I'm sure it's fine.

Ouch, that hurt. My sister-in-law has a salvage title on her 987. Some states are great for "title washing". In New York (this was an Ebay purchase) it was salvage, but in Hawaii, it's just another used car.

Marc,

Thanks for the info. I just looked up the carfax report. What a kick in the pants! I used experian autocheck service which showed nothing. Interestingly, the car is covered under buyback protection if a salvage title appears that was not on their VIN check.

I wonder if it would be worth while to have my local Porsche dealer take another look at to see if there is any concern (monday appt) or should I take advantage of the buyback protection? I really just want a fun to drive p-car, not interested in later modifications/resstoration, etc.

The rebuild must have been of reasonable quality if it has lasted 130,000 miles.

I'd want my PPI money back. You may not have know what that tag meant, but they should have at least suspected what was going on there.

IF you are going to keep the car for a long, long time don't worry.

If you care at all about resale value, get your money back with the buyback protection.

I would go for the buyback protection regardless. But the way it reads, in order to be eligible the title has to show as being "branded". What does your title say?

Title does not have any type of Branding or Salvage/Rebuilt labels. Talked to Ill DMV they said that stolen vehicles are also issued the same Salvage/Rebuilt title as wrecked vehicles. I'm going to have to do some more searching

Take it to a body shop that knows these cars - they'll tell you in a heartbeat whether it's had any work done to it or not. I'd almost lean towards the theft-recovery theory; a hit so severe that it would cause a 4-yr.-old, 14K mi. car to be totaled should be pretty obvious to any shop, even if a masterful rebuild was done. Some things just can't be put back to factory, and a shop would see that.

doesn't carfax only cover the first $10k?... What about the service you used, do they offer 100% buyback?
