Keith,
I have used an Autothority chip in my 1984 911 for the last four years. I also have a cat by-pass pipe, Dansk sport muffler, and K&N cone air filter.
I am very pleased with the Autothority chip. Nice stong and steady power across the RPM range (no flat spots), especially in the low and mid-ranges. Max RPM is increased by 400 rpm's. Car runs very smooth and strong. All power references are subjective, since I have never had my car on a dyno; I am very satisified with the Autothority chip.
Autothority chips are a little pricy, but they put a lot of R&D into their chips.

Bruce,
I have a 1984 Carrera as well. I appreciate the recommendation on the Autothority chip. I've heard good things about them from other quarters as well. My car needs some more oomph, so I'll probably head for Autothority. A couple questions... which Autothority chip did you get? A custom one, or the off-the-shelf 3.2?
Also, I'm wondering if you or any listers are familiar with the phenomenon among the earliest 3.2 Carreras of the soldered chip. My car is very early - door stamp 10/83. I haven't looked at the chip board to see, but I'm afraid chipping could be more difficult or even prohibitive for me. Does anyone know anything about this situation? Bruce, if your chipped just fine, what's the date stamped on your door?
Cheers!

Hugh,
You raise a very good point. The date stamp on my driver's door jamb sticker is the same as yours (10/83), maybe our cars are related?
I did in fact have a soldered chip in my Motronic "brain box". I had the chip installed at Autothority's facility in Fairfax, VA. They had a solder jig that easily removed the OEM chip. They then soldered in a new chip socket, and the high performance chip fits into the new socket. This set up will allow me to change chips easily in the future, if required. I have been told by others that had soldered chips, that electronics shops were able to remove the old soldered chips without to much problem.
I don't know if a have a special "custom" chip or not. Autothority asked what mods had been done to my car, and then installed the chip. I paid their normal list price, so I don't know if they tweeked the chip for my freer flowing exhaust system. All I know is the car runs great!
Hope this helps, Bruce

I don't know if Autothority is running any deals, you might want to give them a call or check with one of their dealers. I'm sure you could get a list of their dealers and maybe find one closer to your home.
I recall paying about $475 for the chip four years ago; I do not know what the price is today.

Thanks for the info on the soldered chip, Bruce. All is not lost. It's sort of a big "duh" - now I recall watching with my own eyes my tuner's installation of a Garrett chip in my Audi. The stock chip was soldered and he did the same thing you described. Being on the west coast, I'll just have to find a good tuner to do a nice, careful version of the job you describe.
Yeah, our cars must be related. Mine's an off-white cream with chocolate brown interior, black Fuchs, 93K miles, no mods except cat bypass... a blank canvas!
Cheers,

I had the Weltmeister chip in my '86 911 and was very happy with it, I believe they're manufactured by Dinan. The engine revved very nice and I didn't notice any flat spots. I changed it to a custom mapped Autothority chip when I added a set of headers.

I previously had an 87 Carerra with a Weltmeister chip and the car ran very strong and smooth. It had a little extra kick around 4500 RPM as well. We traded that car in at around 115K miles for a 993 C4 Cab (and still miss the 87).
