Check for accident damage. If it was clobbered and a NE car, walk. the integrety of the seams will be starting places for rust. Forget about the rust on the bumber. No big deal. Look under the front seat for water that may have gotten around the computer. Things to be wary of with a 85K mile car are broken studs (read expensive) transmission woes, clutch. Some mechanical stuff can be tolerated because of the price. Budget 3K for unseen mechanical repairs like cv boots. Can you do some of your own work? Makes a difference. Look under the battery for rust and corrosion. Real problem possibility if not caught and filxed. Given accident free, I might go for it except I already have 2SCs and 1/2 of a 87 Carrera. Good luck.

X2 on an independent PPI, not where they send you but where you choose.

It also looks like there is rust below the VIN sticker on the left door post, as well as under the deco trim under the rear window.

Regarding the steering rack, we replaced boxes full of tie rod ends, but I can only remember replacing one pre-power steering rack on an '89 or earlier car - in almost 25 years of servicing/maintaining 911s daily. In a couple of pictures it looks like the doors have been repainted. If yes, I would guess because someone had stolen the exterior mirrors at one point during the car's life.

Rust = RUN!

Report from Jerry was not good, so I'm taking a pass on this one; my search continues. Thanks to all for their comments.

Please add your location to your profile. Let us know what you're looking for and how much you have to spend, and we can keep our eyes open. Have you checked your local Craigslist?

Cheers,

Paul.

Thanks everyone. I have updated my profile to reflect my location in Boston. I'm looking for a Carrera, with no whale tail (wife doesn't like). Probably a Targa, as the slightly increased head room in the back seat was appreciated by my 12 year-old son, the prospective passenger there. Budget is 20K +/-.

The real killer for me from EPE's report was the gearbox was leaking and would probably need 1st & 2nd gears rebuilt. Also, gas tank was rusted to the point of needing replacement. All that added up to repairs in excess of what I could get a nicer example for. I'm in no rush, but thinking that the upcoming winter will have downward pressure on prices locally. Thanks again.

You should be able to find a really nice rust-free G-50 Targa for $20k. How far are you willing to travel?

Here are a couple more I'm looking at this weekend. First is an 86, but from the Carfax report, and confirmed by the owner, has only been driven 200 miles in the last 5 years! I know this is an issue with all the rubber bits, and anything else that ages, rather than wears. Looks pristine from the photos, but 26K is pretty high, given that belts, hoses, tires, are suspect given the disuse. http://tinyurl.com/24g5dy

The other is a nice one that's on ebay, http://tinyurl.com/yrj94d, not super-crazy about the interior color, nor the spoiler, but seems nice, and Rennlist has had good things to say about Randolph Racing.

Peter, your book is on the way. I'm looking forward to devouring it.

I like the car from Maine. It is an honest car without the embelishment of the tail. I'm sure in Maine you have to store the car in winter and 200 miles in five years dowsn't bother me at all. I think the color is even a plus on this car.

changed my mind....I'd be buying a one way ticket to Denver right now.

But then again, the M491 was a really great looking car.

Have you driven both coupe and targa, then 964 and 993 models? Might want to try that- you'll soon figure out what you want/don't want. There are pros and cons for all, but there are vast resources available (here and on the Pelican forum). Good luck with your search!

Cheers,

Paul.

I'd look seriously at both of these;

Great looking cars. Both very different, yet awesome in their own way.
