Wasn't Mobil1 re-reformulated lately(double re intended)? Something about gold caps vs red caps? I was just about to change my oil and use Mobil1 but now see that the expert consensus is for Brad Penn oil. Anybody buying that locally in the SF Bay Area?

Nobody uses Kendall 20w-50 anymore, that's all that I used to use.

Mobil DID reforumulate their oils (all of them) but the chemistry of both red & silver cap products fall far short in the ZDDP content and we won't use them any longer.

FWIW, I did ship two cases of Brad-Penn to a Bay Area customer today,....

Thanks Steve! I've just finished up some very interesting reading in the pelican forums on this subject and ended up submitting a request to Brad Penn to see if we have any local dealers. If not I'll be in touch ;-)

Zinc: 1200 ppm (.12%)
Phosphorus: 1100 ppm (.11%)

Well, it won't be the Kendall SM stuff anymore man.

Just got an email from Royal Purple, they will not disclose their levels of Zinc & Phosphorus, but state it meets "SL" spec.

Does anyone happen to have the SAE / API ratings & corresponding Zn / P levels? I have been googling (apparently poorly) for awhile...

Just about to do an oil change this weekend so this thread caught my eye. Yesterday I posted on the site: bobistheoilguy with a similar question about which oil is best for older Porsches. As usual, received many responses and very interesting reading....usually get an education when I post on that site.

Anyway, just contacted Brad Penn for a local distributor. Found one about 25 miles away and they're holding two cases for me to pick up tomorrow. Price is great..........woman on the phone was very accomodating. Rennlist is amazing.

after lot's of reading nine months ago here on Rennlist I went with Castral GTX 20W50. I did the reading on GM's EOS and I can get lots of it here locally. Did I get the wrong oil? If not, should I be adding the EOS, and how much? Sorry guys, but I'm a little slow.

The Brad Penn is just fine. It is formulated different, using three detergents in lower levels to acheive the 10 TBN rather than high levels of just one. It is also not friction modified, so technically it takes alot more to shear the oil (hence the high HTHS vis). That's why sometime's it is hard to go by just Zn and P #'s.

Man, those folks at Brad-Penn are great. An email and a day later I get two responses: one from B-P telling me they've forwarded my email to a distributor local to me, and another email straight from the distributor who'd said they'd be happy to ship them to either me or my buddy's shop. Wow! Now that's customer service to celebrate. We should support them on that point alone!

You are aware that GM has discontinued selling EOS although there should be an AC-Delco equivalent out there. Castrol is ok but there are issues that some are concerned about. Read here and my "Ultimate Oil Thread or why we Hate CJ4/SM Oil" thread at pelican for lots of pros and cons.

And not to stir the pot again, but I bought a good amount of EOS as an attempt to acquire the stuff for other listers here who couldn't get it. Yes, STP etc. etc.; if someone needs EOS, I have a few cases extra of it & know where there's 3 more cases local to me.
