Default Plastic fuel tank on 1973 911

Hello

I have a plastic fuel tank in my 1973 911 E. Is that the original tank or a replacement? I thought that only the RS model had a plastic tank?

Some of the "S" models came w/ plastic tanks, and I imagine an "E" could have been ordered with one as well, or it could have been a replacement at some point in the car's history. The only way to know if it is original on your car is to contact PAG and order the Kardex info for it.

Do you know when your car was produced? If so another clue would be the date code that is on the top of the tank. If it is dated later than the production date than it is likely a replacement.

yours is probably worth a fortune - be careful in selling it if you do.

Hi Randy,

Tom is correct. The large plastic tank could be ordered for most ROW cars in '73. I am not sure if the option was for only 'S' models though. That is one of the reasons it would be interesting to see the CoA for Seba's '73 E.

It might be a good idea to check out what kind of plastic was used in those tanks. There is a lot of info available these days about plastic fuel tanks in boats and the damage now being caused by ethanol being mixed with gasoline in those plastic fuel tanks. The problems worsen as the percentage of ethanol increases. I think (not at all sure) those problems have to do with polyethylene tanks, but not certain. In any case, those tanks were fine with gasoline, but not ethanol/gasoline mixtures. The better boat manufacturers who used plastic in the past are switching to aluminum fuel tanks.
