'Morning folks,
This may be the last good day to drive my 911 before spring, I'm down a quart or 2, and can't find Mobil 1 15w-50 anywhere in town.
So, before I start doing chemistry experiments with my new (to me) car...anyone recommend what I can mix in? Mobil 5W-50 is available everywhere, some other brand with 0W40 (0?!--what's that?) is also abundant.
Thanks in advance,
Brent

stay away from 0w40 for our cars for obvious reasons... with all that oil in the tank for one day i wouldn't worry about it anyway unless oyur autocrosing o something. it will alll be coming out anyway ..
interesting topic though , any of you guys in the cooler climates going to change viscosity for the fall , say a 15/ 40 down from the 20/50 ?

I checked both walmarts, and went to a one of those quick oil change places. No one had it.
Location is Calgary. Thanks for the offer, gt100 lover.
I don't think I'll be changing out the oil for cooler climate. We've already had a snow fall. By the end of October, winter has usually arrived for keeps, so I'll be hanging up my keys til spring any day now.
Nice drive yesterday, though, so I was relieved to hear I can use 5W 50 in the pinch.

OK, I sold my 911, but I want to respond to Iceman. Some time ago there was a thread in Pelican by a mechanic at a Porsche shop that did their own measurements over time, a kind of informal study. A detailed search of Pelican might cough it up. The upshot was that 911s that used lower than 50W oil had more valve guide wear, period. I drove my Carrera two winters and used Mobil1 0W-40 and after reading that I returned immediately to 15W-50 and stopped driving it winters. I used M1 15W-50 down to 20 degrees with no problem, it will flow just fine. And they do sell the good stuff at Wal-Mart, not the "Extended Mileage" stuff, in 5-gallon containers at the best price anywhere. And may I suggest as a 1 quart patch, the oil I use in everything else I own, Mobil1 Delvac 5W-40?

Great info D
I shouold be good to go with 20 50 till the end of the season then , My tires are not for freezing temperaturers so that will be the determining factor for me. I tyypically do not star my car from December to March due to the cold but it is nice to know that I could ...

Don't give us that bull about not starting you car between Dec and March. The REAL reason is you are out of money and cannot afford the 35 belts you would need. Plus rags, oil caps etc.etc. !!!!!
Have a great one

Slightly off thread.
As you guys go into a "salty" winter I'd just like to remind you that we are approaching our Summer which is great for driving!
Come to think of it, our winter's great for driving too

Can you find some Mobil 1 or other good motorcycle or diesel oil in 15w-50? Its a valid substitute, and some mechanics actually recommend it because of the zinc and phosphate levels are still high on 4-cycle motorcycle oil whereas API has changed the auto formulations.

Frank's pic is photoshopped. Australia is bone-dry parched, even more than usual with their drought, yet those Auzzies conspire to perpetrate the myth that they are in a lush sub-tropical paradise.
That pic of his Porsche in his signature block? That's more like it. After it's been cleaned.
