Default Looking for a shop in Orange County (So Cal) for PPI

I'm in the process of picking up a 88 Carrera with 140k miles. The seller said the top end was rebuild around 100k miles by Pristine Porsche service plus he takes his car there for all maintenance and oil change. Is anyone familiar with that shop and their reputation? I don't think I want to take the car to Pristine for a PPI so where else in the OC area would you recommend and how much will it run? Also, can you tell from the VIN that the car has a factory wide body? Thank you.

Go see Jeff Erickson at Aase Motors in Fullerton. He'll take care of you. 714-992-2283. Tell him Mike from the POC told you to call.

Thank you Mike.
Also, how can I tell if the car has a factory turbo body?

Most likely no. The VIN may reveal its a "coupe". If there is any type of option codes sticker in the car or in the owners manaul that may be of more help.

A good VIN decoder can be found HERE. Look for a link to "Scouser's VIN Decoder". You will have to register at the site to use it but its free.

Hergesheimer Motorsports is an excellent shop (Lake Forest). Mark and Laura are top-notch folks and will certainly treat you well!

Just got back from the test drive and like to share my findings below:

1) Oil leaks (1-2 drops) at 3 corners on the floor after the car is parked for roughly 10 minutes. Oil is also visible on the cover below the valve cover with the Porsche logo (see attachment) and on the passenger side exhaust pipe.

2) Shocks seems to be worn but I don't know how to tell for sure but when I go over those little lane divider bumps and small dips, it feels like the car is bottoming out and you can feel the thump on steering wheel. Turning feels fine so does this mean the shocks are gone?

3) Clutch feels fine and shifting feels solid and precise. All gears will engage with about 30% clutch travel.

4) There is this 60mph shaking on the steering wheel and it will shake harder as speed increases but it goes away at about 80mph. What seems to be the cause of this?

5) The middle retractable hinge on the driver side door is loose so it clicks when you "swing" the door open/close. Is this an expensive fix?

6) The oil level needle drops all the way down during hard acceleration but returns to normal when I lift throttle and also when I blip the throttle in idle. Is this normal?

5) Overall exterior/int looks great. Top end was rebuild 35k miles ago and the car now has 140k. The is a 88 venetian blue cabriolet with factory wide body and the owner wants $20k. He says he's got all records on the car but I haven't seen it. What do you all think?

B2bomber

Oil on exhaust is a concern. It could be from the base of the cylinder.Broken head studs maybe. Been there before the hard way. Get a PPI

Good luck

MUSSBERGER, I keep hearing about that car, but don't know why? Why? Do I need to go on another RENNLIST roadtrip? What's up with Mexico Blue, they do have a Carrera with blue right out of the 1980's...It looked almost ven blue met

On the Options List (usually a sticker/plate on the underside of front hood lid) the option M491 denotes a factory wide body.

Door "click" is a broken/loose Door Stop. Worse case, if it's broken/breaking off it's weld to the inside of the door, it will need repair---I've heard up to $1000 for quality repair job. The part itself is like $100.only.
Very worse case scenario--failure of the door stop, so swinging open door will not stop until sheet metal bends---ouch$$

Shocks: yes, sounds like you will need (want) new shock (eg Bilstein HD). The steering wheel 'thump' may signal the need of a Bump Steer Kit--fairly cheap mod, needed for cars that are lowered. If you buy this car, you'd want the suspension gone over--well worth +/- $2K. Will drive like different (better) car.

60-80mph shake--could be wheel alignment/wheel inbalance. See comment above about suspension redo.

Oil level needle=normal

If your list is complete, then that price is VERY GOOD (assuming M491 option, not aftermarket widebody).

Get the PPI (anywhere from $200-$400), and if there's nothing major identified, I'd jump on it.

Good Luck!

Forgot one thing, the AC is not very cold. What do owners out there normally do since you can't charge these with the old freon and AC pluming?

Rather disappointed after the PPI by Aase Motor. But first, here's the VIN in case someone is looking at the same car: WPOEBO918JS171497.

1) Oil leak at cam tower, passenger side exhaust manifold estimated $2500 and $2000 clutch work due to clutch no returning all the way to the top. These are the two major issues and most expensive.

2) Car needs 15k service badly and plug wire sets, cap and rotors
3) AC blows warm at 74 degrees
4) Two front shocks need to be replaced
5) Both doors seemed to be repainted and orange peel is evident
6) Driver side door does not line up perfectly behind the front fender and loose door stop. This car's definitely been in some minor fender bender but the body/chassis seem to be straight.
7) Couple cracks on the dash, new dash was quoted at $1k but it doesn't bother me now.
8) Need brakes soon, only 30% F and 50% R remaining.
9) Front running lights and parking lights are reversed inside the cover, not sure which idiot did that. Fog light lenses need to be replaced also.
10) Leak down shows 5-7-7-6-6-6%

The seller won't budge on the $20k so I guess I will continue my search else where. What a shame on a rare wide body cab.
