Pre Purchase Inspection, of which a compression and/or leakdown test is but one aspect, but an important one nonetheless, grasshopper (sorry, 'grasshopper' just seemed appropriate there...)

It's complete inspection of the car by knowledgable mechanic. PPI - Pre Purchase Inspection. Both compression and leakdown.
My feeling is, the older the car, the more extensive the inspection. Sometimes both mechanical and body.
My .02c.

PPI's are very informative when buying a car! I just paid $200 for one today and found out that I'm not going to buy the car!
Damnit! O'well, it's better to blow $200 than to spend $12K on a bad car!!!

Trust me, you definitely made the right choice. I know MANY 911 owners who didn't do a PPI and they paid for it dearly shortly after they purchased the car. Two of my POC buds dumped well over $10k into their 911SCs because they rushed their decision to get a 911 w/o a PPI.
