Wrap a baggie around the distributor. I probably would avoid the spark plug holes. Don't remove the spark plugs if there is water in there or it will fall into the cylinder. Other than that I think you should be fine.
Recently, Dept.'s of Environmental Health in many cities and counties across the U.S. now forbid the washing of engines or car parts where the "discharge" goes into the stormdrains, or on to surface run-off. If a neighbor or stranger sees you and calls the local cops, you could be cited. It isn't cheap, either.
If you MUST spraywash/rinse your engine, trans, greasy tools or parts, etc., use a catch pan, and take the "effluent" to a household hazardous waste (HHW) faciltity near you (note: if a city/county enforces "non-source-point pollution" laws, they will provide HHW facilities - usually near a landfill).
I've gone from spraying my car engines to the Simplegreen-wipe-and-shine method to avoid accidental effluent discharge into the stormdrains.

Just my "green" 2-cents.
Every little bit helps. I remember just 15 years ago when people wouldn't think much about doing an oil change over a grass field, emptying the coolant down the drain, or burning used tires out in brushfires.
It seems we have come a long way since then...which is good.
