Default Quick introduction

Hey Guys,

Thought I'd post up a few words, and tell you a little about myself. My name is Al Larson, and I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I'm a long time Porsche fan, but never an owner. I am a long time BMW owner however, as well as VW's, Volvo's, and several other European marques. I'm a licensed tech, and BMW indi repair shop owner, as well as owner of Seams Perfect Auto Upholstery & Trim(BMW specialist).

Anyway, I've recently been informed of a 70 or 71 911 targa for sale on Vancouver Island. It belongs to the father of my newest staffer, and is a long time project car, sitting in the garage. James father is an air cooled VW expert, and long time VW shop owner. He bought the car a little over 10 years ago, non running, in need of an engine. He tore it down, had all the machine work done, bought all the new parts needed, and never put it back together. The car had Weber downdraft carbs, which are included. Previous owner also fitted it with a 74- rear bumper, although the original bumper is on it. It needs paint(faded original red), interior is trashed, engine needs re-assembly, and all other systems will of course need to be gone through. Rust free as well, which is a HUGE plus, as you guys know.

The car can be mine for about $4500, but I'm not ready to hop into another project right this second. I have 2 BMW project cars to complete, and am running out of space. Tentative schedule is some time next winter to pick it up, and dive in. Plans will include upholstery(original), assemble the engine, sort the other systems, and drive it. No big dollar paint jobs, nothing fancy. Just a nice, solid, original driver. A true sports car, if you will.

Looking forward to contributing to the forums, and perhaps offering some 911 interior items in the time to come. Shopping Porsche carpet kits online, and am a little amazed at the prices being offered! Yikes! We can certainly manufacture carpet sets for less than the usual online sources. Time will tell....

Sounds like quite a project. But the acquisition price isn't too bad. Well, as long as you're a tech and an Interior specialist, you should be good to go after the winter. Good luck and post some "before" pics as well

Al, welcome to the site. It sounds like you've bitten off a big project, but it'll be neat when you sit in the seat for the first time and drive her away. I concur with your comments regarding the cost some of these guys charge for "authentic" carpet sets you have to then install yourself. From my experience I can take it down to a good interior shop here in Orlando and have it installed for around the same price, and buy the higher quality material at the same time.

Good luck with it all and don't hesitate to ask for advice, if nothing else we've got opinions. Like Murphy stated above, as you go through the project send some pics please.
