to GeoC2,

I used to cruise all over UpperNYS fro my job before getting into mangement. If wanted to enjoy NJ up to Albany I'd head east (interstate 287?) and look to hook up with the Taconic State Pkwy. ( trucks not allowed, but an occasional smoky in the bushes). Any other points in NY let me know, I can possibly recommend a fun route.

James Archard- I know the road, actually one of many in that area. How about the "hairpin"(Petersburgh/Rte2).

There are advantages to living in area where the roads were originaly cow paths, the economy is stagnant and the climate discourages too much population.

Here in the foothills of the Appalachians in central Kentucky I get to choose from beautiful windy roads thru the horse farms or venture over to The Red River Gorge area and (especially this time of year) you can bite off as much as you want of a challenging route thru this scenic forest. The best entre to the area is a road called tarr Ridge , about 8 miles or incredibly winding asphalt that has good visibility curve to curve AND has a natural banking of more than a few deegrees. I find myself going back and forth and back....
Anybody coming to Central KY...give me a call

I don't think there's any good reasons to feel sorry for us SoCal Porsche owners. Last month I drove at Willow Springs, where it was warm and dry. In two weeks I'm driving at Laguna Seca. We have a lot of great tracks within a few hours' drive, and you can't throw a rock without hitting a Porsche performance shop. Sure, there's traffic, but it's because the roads are filled with Porsches.....twelve months a year

Mcfadden Wharf to 25th St.Newport Beach. Not twisty and only 300 yds. You usually can't get out of first gear, but one run will net you a companion that will make your socks rock. The twisties come later.
Cheers,
Mrdi

An excellent but rather short run is rt. 97 north out of Port Jervis, NY. The road section (appropriately called "Hawks Nest") hugs a steep mountain with the Delaware river about 500 ft below you. Its awsome to run at speed if you get it at the right time - but watch out!- rock walls await on either side of the two lane. Its often featured in car advertisements. (If I knew how I'd post a pic.- just watch the next Pontiac commercial )

Rt. 97 north of there is nice too as it follows the upper Delaware. For the folks in up-state NY looking for nice rides: Another less curvey but beautiful ride close to that one is rt. 6 north from Milford, PA- often cited as one of the 10 top picturesque country roads in USA . I also like (I think) rt. 7 east from Troy, NY our towards NH and rt. 100 north from Wilmington, DE towards Chattsford, PA.

Thumbs up

Out here in Southern Colorado one of the best
Porsche roads is Hwy 550, north from Durango to Ouray.
82 miles, 3 mountain passes ranging in elevation from 10,000 to 12,000 ft, scenery that will blow you away,
130 mph straights, 10 mph curves (well thats what the sign says, I'm too busy watching the tach race in 2nd gear ) More corners than you can count, and if you are afraid of heights, DON'T look over the edge !!
If you have ever driven this stretch of road, you know what I'm talking about.
Now that winter has set in, its subject to heavy snow & daily avalanches.

Porsche, there is NO substitute !

Ohio SR 56 to 356 in rural Athens and Vinton County, ending at a place called Moonville that used to be a town 100 years ago.

You better hope the car doesn't break because the guys from "Deliverance" all live there

Favorite motorcycle/Porsche roads in Northern California include (by preference):

Skaggs Spring/Stewarts Point from Cloverdale to coast and romp back Highway one to SF

Highway 128/Pope Valley Road (early morning race track that several friends have seriously hurt themselves on - beware)

Ahwahnee for Sunday brunch in Yosemeti starting at Vasco Rd. 76 station, turn right on Vasco to dead end at Tesla Rd. (J2)
Left on Tesla Rd. to 580 (Tesla turns into Corral Hollow Road. This won't matter 'til later). Right on 580 two miles to 132 towards Modesto Follow 132 approx. 65 miles to Exxon station past La Grange. STOP FOR GAS. Continue on 132 to Coulterville.
Turn left on 49 then immediately right at store. Follow Greely Hill Rd.
(J132) as it turns into Smith Station Rd. (still 132) to Hwy. 120. Right on 120 into Yosemite Valley

Enjoy!

This isn't really a drive . . . more of a short stretch of road that's really fun: In San Francisco, that winding, uphill portion of Market Street heading outbound (towards Portola Drive). The incline really gets my turbo going, and the turns are a blast.

Rte 611, 32 and 209, all interconnected and winding along the Delware River in Eastern PA .. from New Hope to Dingman's Ferry. Some of the most beatufil scenery you'll see, and more twisties than you can shake a stick at. Local Police in PA are not allowed to user radar, so its pretty safe. Depending on the time of year, Deer and Bear are the only obstacles you are likely to encounter.

Nobody mentions Rt. 100 in Vermont? From about Sept. 15 to October 15, this may be the best in the country.

SF East Bay: Bear Creek between Orinda & Martinez past Briones State Park and back again. No traffic (other than bicyclists) to speak of, EBMUD watershed and oak-covered golden hills.

And to those back east, any of the roads emanating from Ithaca - remember them well from my younger, student days. Wish I had a P-Car then, but don't miss those winters!
