Default Synthetic Oil Viscosity

I just bought a used 911sc engine from a guy that says he used Mobil 1 oil exclusively. I've never used synthetic oils and wondered if I could get any advice on the correct viscosity for this engine. The car is mainly going to be used for the track and I live in Arizona so it's usually hot. Thanks for any help.

If you keep using Mobil 1, you need to use the 15w-50 product.

Yes,..I've been trying to find the NEW stuff (reissued),..I do believe it to be SL/SM rated.....

Mobile One's web site shows it with (what appears to be) a clear cap (NOT gold)...

I've not checked walmart but will tonight...

You sure can't find it at ANY parts stores around here................

Thanks,

Wal Mart has it - it has a red top and is NOT the extended performance version with the gold top. My understanding is you can use the gold top SL, but if you do add EOS or equivalent, such as diesel oil extender.

The SL I have has adequate Zinc and should not have EOS or anything else added to it.

Dunno if there are different formulations of the SL but I doubt that.

Red top? What? Help me out hear guys. From Mobile One's web site:

Why are you reintroducing Mobil 1 15W-50? Have there been any changes to the formulation, or is it identical to the previous product?

Mobil 1 15W-50 is being reintroduced based on popular demand. Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs. This is a new Mobil 1 15W-50 formulation and is not the same as the product that was marketed a few years ago.

Mobil 1 15W-50 exceeds warranty requirements for gasoline engines where an API certified oil is specified. It meets:

API SM/SL

Requirements for Diesel Powered Vehicles where an API CF or API CD is recommended

Provides extra anti-wear additive for older vehicles

Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated with SuperSyn, an extra-high viscosity synthetic fluid, plus extra anti-wear additive to provide extra protection for severe service applications such as towing, hauling and racing. Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is also recommended for older valve train designs that may benefit from a higher level of anti-wear normally not required for newer generation vehicles. Mobil 1 15W-50 will also provide better anti-wear protection for higher valve spring tensions in certain racing engines.

.........the pic from the website ( http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/Mo...1_15W-50_.aspx ) sure seems to be a clear (or silver?) top...not gold,..not red.........

THIS is the oil I'm asking about. Is this what's at WalMart?

Thanks in advance

My best,,

I'll check Navarro's site to see if he's had a chance to (virgin) test this reissue oil........want to know where those "levels" are...then plot from there...

Will be heading to WM tomorrow to see if the shelves contain the NEW reissued product...looking for workable levels on the oil of all the good stuff, and staying away from additives (for now)....

Ran Mobile One , old,..S/L stuff since I got the car last November...enough old stuff for 2 oil changes then WHAM...nothing available but extended mileage stuff.....made the change to Royal Purple on the last one and long to get the NEW stuff, as I feel the testing will prove Z&P OK (?)

....hope the WM stock you guys are referring to is, in fact, the oil I'm referring to.......

Thanks, guys!!!!

Best to all,...

Thats the newest formulation and thats the one you want. Look at the API label and it should be SL/SM.

The older red-cap & gold cap products were SL and those were OK, too.

I hear that the best vintage for the red tops is '05 in the Cotes du Nuit, but gold tops were best in 1986 in St Emilion...
