Default Oil Questions

When I look at the Mobil 1 site myself I see the 15W-50 data sheet for the gold cap product only, and my local distributor says that there is no other. They also say that the gold cap SM/CF rating certainly includes at least a SM/SL rating. I also brought up the link the gentleman above found with the silver cap photo, and see that both web sites were created in the same year, although that is probably the year the Mobil site was revised. Can anyone explain the confusion? Why cannot an ordinary Joe like myself find the silver cap "new formulation" by going myself to the Mobil 1 website, and why would a distributor not know of it?

Question 2: Can I not use Mobil 1 20W-50 "Clean Engine" formulation for one change to swell my seals?

Wink

This is Autobarn's description:

Mobil 1® Extended Performance is a new high-endurance motor oil with 36 percent more anti-wear additives and 37 percent more cleaning agents than current Mobil 1 formulations. Mobil 1® Extended Performance is a fully synthetic formulation that helps extend engine life, reduce oil breakdown and minimize engine wear -- all while helping to keep your engine clean. Improvements that add up to exceptional protection for 15,000 miles. Guaranteed.

Autobarn's photo: Gold Cap. Case Closed.

I've experienced the same difficulties in getting the "NEW" stuff.......off to Walmart this weekend...the only place not yet checked.... The auto parts place oil experts have even been argumentive as to the new stuff (if they don't know about it, then it doesn't exist....RIGHT,..give me your browser arsehole and I'll show you......one starts talking Zinc and Phosphorous depletions and they feel offended or something)..GEEEEZE...

Drop an online source for the new STUFF (silver cap) so I can put this to bed.

Thanks!!

What I'm saying is that I believe that the gold cap stuff IS the newest stuff, which supercedes the silver cap stuff, unless someone can prove conclusively otherwise. Anyone should be able to go to the main Mobiloil or Mobil1 site and click the links to the latest 15W-50. Is that not reasoble? Why not? Would Mobil1 reissue an oil and not want anyone to know about it?

Default Are there significant issues when changing from Dino oil to Mobil 1?

Is it a given that engine oil seals will start leaking? Any way to prevent this?

derMond:

Of course it's reasonable to look on their site,..and no, it's not reasonable that Mobile One would make it difficult ..

Read below and you tell me what you think, cowboy:

Here's what I'm looking for [[[NOT GOLD CAP]]]::::::note the wording::::::::

http://mobiloil.com/USA-English/Moto...1_15W-50_.aspx

Mobil 1 15W-50
Back by popular demand, Mobil 1® 15W-50's high viscosity provides outstanding performance in high-revving, high-temperature conditions.
Mobil 1 15W-50 exceeds warranty requirements for gasoline engines where an API certified oil is specified. It meets:

API SM/SL

Requirements for Diesel Powered Vehicles where an API CF or API CD is recommended

Provides extra anti-wear additive for older vehicles

Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated with SuperSyn, an extra-high viscosity synthetic fluid, plus extra anti-wear additive to provide extra protection for severe service applications such as towing, hauling and racing. Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is also recommended for older valve train designs that may benefit from a higher level of anti-wear normally not required for newer generation vehicles. Mobil 1 15W-50 will also provide better anti-wear protection for higher valve spring tensions in certain racing engines.

For more information, see the Mobil 1 15W-50 Product Data Sheet and Material Safety Data Sheet.

OR>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

GOLD CAP (your stuff?)::::::::again, note the wording:::::::::::

http://mobiloil.com/USA-English/Moto...ce_15W-50.aspx

Mobil 1
Extended Performance
15W-50

Available in a 15W-50 grade, Mobil 1® Extended Performance
15W-50's high viscosity provides outstanding performance in high-revving, high-temperature conditions.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 meets the following industry approvals:

API SM

It also meets the requirements for diesel powered vehicles where an API CF or CD oil is recommended.

All Mobil 1 Extended Performance viscosity grades have been tested to be fully compatible with engine seals and conventional oils. They do not require a special oil filter.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance motor oil is designed for today's longer service intervals. Mobil 1 Extended Performance with the Advanced SuperSyn System helps keep engines running like new and helps extend engine life by reducing wear and oil breakdown. Please follow the recommendations in your owner's manual while your car is under warranty.

....now,..where were we?

Default My Bad

Happened to be at Wal-Mart yesterday and found the silver-capped oil in question in a 5-quart container for $19.94. Took my Extended Performance gold-capped and gold-priced oil right back to NAPA. Sorry to have been such a Homer Simpson on this one. Usually I can navigate websites more proficiently. At any rate, boy, did I save money on this oil change!

I've yet to get to WalMart...I sure hope they have it here in Macon.

Will check in with Dr. Charles Navarro on his virgin testing of this silver capped oil...should have adequate Z & P right out of the bottle. (SuperSyn..silver) Then see how it fares after 3K miles via oil analysis.....

...come on WalMart!!

I just picked up the WalMart 5-quart jugs today for the 993. I was expecting to pay a mint, but was pleasantly surprised to see it at the 19.94 price ...so I got another 10qts for the SC-Trackmeister

start barking now!

maybe you are thinking of using synthetics in the TRANSMISSION? - most will not work well there; use Swepco 201 in the 915, 911, and 901 transmissions
