3.0 vs 3.2 Power Difference????
How much faster is a 3.2 over the 3.0?
If the 3.0 car was 175 lighter and recently rebuilt with top-of-the-line ARP stuff, would it be close?
Thanks,
Craig

I was recently on track with my mostly stock Targa (heavier than a coupe even) and was running down the back straight with a '85 Carrera with cat bypass and a chip and did fall behind but not by that much. I felt like an extra 10 hp would've let me hang with him. Anyway, the margin was less than I expected especially with his upgrades.

I have had both. 85 Carrera and 78 and 79 SC's. Probably depends on the state of both engines obviously but if all was the same i don't think you are going to be able to tell any difference.
I actually think that my SC feels faster due to the torque curve and power band. the Carrera came on later and hotter. I like the feel of the SC better.

I agree with Donkey. The better conditioned motor. I have a 83 cab and when it was basicallly stock, I pulled alittle on my freind who had a 84 coupe. I think it was just my motor was in better condition.

What race group is it with a US 3.0L SC and a 3.2L Carrera in the same class? In PCA the (US spec) SC is in G and the Carerra is in F. Of course you can run a Euro SC or a modified US SC in F also, which is very competitive. Those extra 800-1000 RPMs are a big difference.

I had a '78sc way back and after may other cars (including a '07 997) now own a 89 carrera. The 3.2 cars seem heavier to me than the SCs, I think the SC felt faster and was more nimble. It was more fun drive. I bought the carrera (vs an SC) because it has bigger AC ducts

The Carrera is supposed to be faster than the SC. Just read all the reviews back when the Carrera came out in '84. Additionally, the upgraded 87-89 Carrera with 217 HP should also be a bit faster, not only due to the HP increase, but also possibly due to the G50 change (faster shifts).
At the end of the day, all these cars are going to be close. The best way to gain performance is to try to remove some weight. When you're talking about 10HP here and 10ft-lbs there, weight is going to make just as much difference as HP, IMO, so try removing the spare tire, AC components, etc if possible.

The 1985 3.2 carrera with 251hp will eat the SC. Down Under we were lucky to ge them. They even give the later 3.2s with the G50 quite a run for their money.
I have driven all three variants recently. The 1985 with a fresh 915 blew me away. Almost like a turbo kicking in after 4000rpm. Probably something to do with the gearing and the extra hp.
But I can understand why guys love the SC. Great car.

My Uncle Steve (Gratton) has a '77 3.0 Euro and he keeps up with the 3.2's and passes them. He is a great driver, but his car is GREAT!
