I was hoping someone could shed some light on this: I purchased my car in october. It is an 89 carrera, and it had 43,000 miles on it at the time, in absolutely mint condition. Recently, I appear to have torn/broken the right rear swaybar mount. My mechanic says that this happens from time to time, but it doesn't seem like it should.
Is this an indication of hard driving or abuse? Does this "happen from time to time?"
Any insight you guys could offer would be appreciated.
Thanks.

JG,
Unfortunately, it does tend to happen. There is a stronger aftermarket swaybar mount that you can purchase. I'm not sure if its a weltmeister part, but I seem to remember seeing the upgraded mount in the Performance catalog.

This happens frequently on these cars especially if you are running larger than stock tires on them. I will try to find those aftermarket ones for you. If you DE the car this is the way to go. My mechanic re-welded mine with a gusset on it so it would last a bit longer.

d'oh! Oh well. Do you think it's likely enough to happen to the other side that I should see about replacing them both at the same time?
Nice pic, Thom. That's about what mine looked like when I got under there.
Thanks again.

Thom,
It looks like you are running an aftermarket sway bar, perhaps a TRG (The Racers Group) bar. Be careful to make sure you have it adjusted so that it does not cause the car to go into a bind which will rip the mounts right off the car.
Regards

Been there done that. I put a set of Charlie Bars (very nicely made by the way) and busted the driver's side mount. I decided to replace both mounts with the updated ones (from Porsche) that have an extra reinforcement. My mechanic also made an extra reinforcement to go with it. He said that this happens on the pre 964 911s. The mounts have been in place for about 18 months. Many DEs and 4 races later and the mounts are still holding.

I'm going to get mine from Steve Weiner.
He'll get you some that are proven.
But you'll need/have to weld them in. So even the best bracket will be worthless without a great, clean weld job.

I replaced the right mount on my car, too. I have the stock sway bar and apparently an attempt had been made by the prior owner to repair the original mount but it didn't hold. The updated Porsche part, # 911.501.983.00, is reinforced compared to the original. FWIW, I only replaced the right side since the left appeared to be OK and is still holding out well.
As the others have said, this is a very common job.

My mechanic replaced the right side yseterday. While doing that, he noticed two things:
The left side was showing some stress.
I was calling like a worried mother.
He replaced both sides, with the reinforced pieces. I'm picking it up later this week.
Thanks for all the info, much appreciated.
