Post 911 roll cage

hello,
I am about to purchase a 1972 911 with intent to DE and possibly club race....does any one of you have any idea on costs of roll cage for these cars...i want a good welded in one, as i am concerned about my safety....plus i need somehting to mount harnesses for the sparcos, the stock seats are like a couch cushion with lots of spring action.

also if any one is interested in purchasing some stock 911 stuff in good condition for being 30years old let me know at tycharle964@hotmail.com ...someone told me the seats are rare b/c they are all black not houndstooth??? if not most of the stuff will go in local landfill

thanks tyler

You should call Dougherty Automotive. Ask for Bill or Colin, they desisn and produce the DAS-Sport roll bars as well as sell Sparco and Corbeau seats. They are well known in PCA circles. Their rollbars are sold by Performance/Automotion, as well they can fabricate anything that you want. They maintain my 911 as well as helped me with my ITB GTI. Great guys to deal with. 610-692-6039 or DAS-Sport.com

Tyler,

I have the Dougherty removeable rollbar. It's pricey, well built, the horizontal bar is a bit low for Recaro SRD's, SRD's won't go all the way back without grinding some of the footing (or raising the SRD to miss the rollbar foot - not a good option for a tall person), it sits on the sills (which is good), and it's removeable. It's not welded in, so you don't get any chassis strength from it, but in a rollover, sitting on the sills, it would provide solid protection.

First, however, you need to decide what you want to do. If you intend to DE for awhile, you don't need a roll cage, but a rollbar is a good thing to have. Look over the PCA web site club racing rules to get an idea of what the requirements are, if you intend to race in that series. Basically, for stock classes you need a rollbar and for prepared or other classes you need a roll cage. If you're thinking SCCA or historic racing (I believe your 72 911 would qualify for HSR or VSCCA or others), look over those series rules.

All that said, if you're interested in a weld in roll cage, you may want to look at the OG Racing roll cage. I know several racers who have it, and are pleased with it. If you want the Dougherty removable rollbar, you may want to wait until Performance has a 20% off sale, which they do a couple of times a year.

Hello,

I also have a '72 911 and am looking to add a roll bar for DE. The DAS rollbars do not "bolt-in" to pre-'74s. The bolt-in point is the seat belt attachment boss in the box section - the early cars don't have this. Dougherty does offer a weld-in (removable) version for our cars. Please keep us posted...

To me for a roll bar, the DAS sport bar is the way to go. Nicely finished, no drilling, and great fit. For a weld in roll cage, again I recommend DAS. They now make an exact replica of the factory "matter" 993 RSR/993GT2 and cup roll cage. Matter has been the exclusive roll cage maker for Porsche and Audi for a long time. If you have looked at one of those inside a GT2 or cup car, you know what a perfect 911 cage looks like. It follows all the curves ot the roofline perfectly. I have seen GT2's roll over with this cage and the fact that the tubing follows the lines so well helps reduce roof damage. If you look at one of those after installing some other cage in the car, depression and regret will set in. Daugherty has copied the 993 and 964 cages bend for bend, and what the send you are the bent parts. The straight sections any competent local cage builder will put in. There is a slight variation on the way the diagonal vertical center bars go on the 964 in comparison to a 993, but the curved sections are basically the same and the cage can be done either way. The way I look at it, if you can get a real factory matter, get it and install it or hold on to it for life. I'm still looking for one. Or get the DAS replica of it. Call them and ask about their cup cage. They are pretty proud of it.
