Default 83 SC Conversion to SS Exhaust

Always looking to spend more money on my favorite plaything (oops, don't let wifey hear that!) and am hearing good things about going Retro and full Stainless...
So, who makes the best SS HE's and appropriate Muffler (2 in, 1 out)?
I would want to keep the O2 Sensor so need an HE with a bung in the left Pipe (hate to weld up stuff, esp. Stainless!)

Prices actually paid for such a system? Any "downsides" to going this route, if not in an Emissions Controlled region? Has anyone ever tried to pass Smog Test with such mods??? Just curious as to how the old girls performed if so???

I see DPS has a decent looking set of HE's w/ Bung for about $1,350.00, shipped... Then have to get the muffler and mabe a few incidentals... Has anyone ever dealt with DPS? Good, Bad, Indifferent?

Thanks!

Without question SSIs are the way to go . I wish I could afford some for myself. You will probably need a new oil line and your choice of muffler. Dansk and Montis seam popular. There are many vendors who will sell you the whole kit, just check out excellence.

Also Pelican sells SSIs . I think the overwhelming response you will get will be SSIs and some variations on the muffler depending on the exhast note you want.

I believe your car even w/o any exhaust modifications is not street legal in CA.

SSI heat exchangers, Dansk polished stainless muffler 2 in 1 out, sounds like a 911, a bit louder than stock and looks great.

Bursch muffler may breathe a little better, but is louder and sounds like a chain saw, and looks like something the corner muffler shop cobbled together, IMO.

Iceman's right, the SC's really respond to the SSI's. I'm running SSI's with a dual in/dual out Dansk muffler. It is loud but it dynoed at 190 HP at the wheels. However the sound at full throttle is pure music. One unexpected side benefit has been that the number of boy racers that want to run light to light have dropped exponentially. Evidently the sound makes them think twice, not that I'm going to take up the challenge.

Here's reving to about 4500 rpm.

The difference, or shall I say "improvement" with SSIs on my 82 is significant. I have 2 into 1 with a very conservative sport muffler (more grumble at idle than stock, but a much better note and just a tad louder overall) and still, without question, the car feels more lively and the engine revs more freely, especially above 4500rpm or so. But if you're in Cali, forget about smogging it legally. Just won't happen. Nada. Zip. THAT is your concession, sorry to say.

Thank you Gentlemen!

So, I need to get the SSI units for a 1983 3.0, W/ a bung for the O2 Sensor on the Left side, and a 2 into one (maybe Dansk) muffler that will fit up to the SSI's, which will also fit my stock muffler hangers..

I shall begin the search! (and also begin multiple applications of PB Blaster to the corroded exhaust nuts! Or, is it easier to just Sawzall the nuts off, and replace all of the studs???)

I have SSIs on my 81 SC & the 14 lb. polished stainless M+K 2 in 1 out. A bit loud but you will sound like a Carrera RS at full song. There are plenty of M+K sound clips on You Tube.

These mods will transform your car.

I have a 79SC with SSI and a two in one out Dansk mufler and I think it sounds tinny. Check out the sound before you go this way.

I bought my SSI's from Steve Weiner as well as a Monty muffler and I am very happy with it in my 81SC.

Ditto. Same setup. SSIs and 2-in-1-out M+K stainless (very light, didn't want to cut the valance for the 2-out style). Heavenly sound at full throttle. I couldn't believe the difference it makes both in power and the speed with which the engine spins up in revs compared to stock.

+ 1, and also from Steve Weiner/Rennsport

The difference is remarkable. I did a DE one weekend, had the mods installed mid-week, and did another DE with the same group the following weekend. I was pulling on cars that I was having issues with the week earlier, no exaggeration. It's not just the poweron paper, it's the power characteristics. The car just flies off the corners now compared to before where the best description was lethargic at best.

I had the opportunity to autox a friend's 1984 Carrera with chip, similar suspension to mine, similar +/- 2600 lb weight. Driven back to back with my car, my car felt a lot faster, and the owner of the Carrera agreed. His exhaust is not stock, but he does not have SSIs.

Question for everyone, though...I'm not running an O2 sensor in the bung. Should I be? Does this affect the performance of the SCs? I figured with no cats, the 02 sensor is not necessary either.
