Post Hirshmann Antenna Motor Repair

The motor in the Hirshmann power antenna in my 81 911 SC isn't working. I've taken ithe box apart and cleaned everything. It clicks when it receives power but the motor doesn't turn on. Any ideas in how to get it fixed. I live in the greater NYC Metro area.

There is a little thermal overload gadget inside the motor that was causing mine to not work.
It was a truly fiddly thing to find and to repair - actually I just bypassed it.
You have to dismantle the antenna unit to get the motor out, then open the motor casing (it is rivetted) then try to avoid breaking the brushes as you extract the armature, which gives you access to the thermal overload. Then take it apart and clean the corroded bits.
A magnifying glass and tweezers are handy.
Then, once it is all back together, you may find, as I did, that the unit was worn out anyway.
I think a new one is less than $100.

The thermal protector is made by Otter, an English company. (Wouldn't you know it!) I contacted Otter, and they were very willing to help. Only problem is, I couldn't read the rating on my Otter unit. (It's a tiny red thing, with two soldered terminals.) If anyone can read the rating, then I will email Otter again, and try to arrange a purchase.

I bypassed the thermal protector in mine for now, too. However, this puts the motor at risk of a burn out. Then, the antenna is junk.

The motor had been working fine, but the antenna was stuck all the way down. When I pulled it out I broke the cable. After getting a replacement mast & cable and cleaning the unit, I put it all back together but it didn't work. Do ypu think that this would be indicative of a burned out thermal unit?

disregard.....thought you were not getting ANY power. Thought it could have been the fuse under the dash.

Charlie,

What fuse under the dash? Where is it? Is it an in-line fuse?

Richard
