Default straight 50w in a 2.7 RS motor?

I am sure this will come as a surprise to most of you but I have been dealing with oil leaks on and off for the last 8 years. Yeah, big surprise! The motor was a 2.4 and modified to a high compression 2.7 back then. Great motor, annoying leaks. I always repair them only to discover another when my back is turned. I was recently told to switch from Mobile-1 10w50, the life blood of this motor since its rebirth, and go straight 50w dino racing oil as I only drive the car in the summer months. My source has a great reputation but I just want a little more conformation. Any one doing this? Any problems starting a car on a 60 degree morning? The car has a front oil cooler and runs about 190F to 210F on hot days.
Thanks, Greg

Try the new high mileage formulas from Pennzoil or Castrol...Mobil 1 has a new one, M1 High Mileage 10w40....They really do work, they contain seal swelling additives. I've dried up more than a few old engines with it. Last one we used was the Castrol High Mileage 20w50 synthetic blend and it dried up a 245,000 mile 944 engine.

I would caution against running straight 50W oil. Excessive pressure at start-up/cold (yes, even 60 degrees) may cause you to blow out some seals/fittings/etc. Most p-car owners find 20-50W works great. J.M.O.

Thanks to both of you. I got the same response from the Pelican boys. I am going with a 20w50 dino oil. Last thing I want is to cause more leaks.
Thanks again, Greg

If you use a high-mileage formula, go with the Castrol GTX HM 20w50. Having tested some of the other brands, I don't like all the wear metals that are in there in a VOA, like aluminum, iron, copper, tin, etc - some look like oil with 'restore' or similar rebuild in a bottle products.

I haven't looked at the new mobil 1 high mileage, but I'd be willing to bet it has low levels of Zn and P, like their non-syn high mileage dino oil.
