Tie Rod Removal: Remove Front Sway Bar?
So I hear it is a good idea to use the tie rod as a wrench for itself, but I cannot see this being possible without removing the front sway bar, or atleast what I think is the front sway bar, can't see that bar as being anything else. Should I remove that bar? Any tips on removal and reinstallation of that bar?

Well it would be pretty impossible to expect to torque it off with a 1 inch lever arm. Unless you are really strong to be able to just twist it off as it sits.

i took off my front bar. 1 side came off easy, the other I needed the leverage of the tie rod. you might try wedging a pry bar in the inner joint and see if you have enough room to twist.

i tried dsmith but it looks like that sway bar is coming off. I found goopy copper colored anti seize on the bolts holding the sway bar and the belly pan, I'll have to get some porsche approved anti seize for when I clean those bolts. Or should I just rebolt it with the anti-seize it already has on the bolt? And just for good measure I suppose I should ask how tight to tighten the new tie rod that I am going to install (turbo tie rod).

the copper anti-sieze is fine. i'm still on my first tube after 10 yrs. you only need a little anti-sieze on a bolt, so i wouldn't add any more. torque on the original tie rod is 34 ft-lbs. locktite is suggested.

any suggestions on how to get the anti sway bar off, as i push one side out it pushes the other side in, its quite difficult and annoying, is there something im missing? And how do you measure the torque you put on the new one, i would think it would be hard to use a torque wrench when installing a tie rod, do you just try to guess what 34-ft-lbs feels like? I will get some locktite threadlocker and some antiseize for the bolts.

I undid the inner bolts and took those off. then I pushed the sway bar all the way to one side so one end was allmost out , then I pulled from the centre of the sway bar towards the back of the car and it popped out .. not nearly as tough as tryin to put it back. Then i replaced all the sway bar bushings while it was off and resprayed my sway bar satin Black .. I should have sprayed it blue though ..
Then the tie rods were pretty easy and I got both jobs done ..

I tried taking one side out it was very difficult and the bar was just not having it I guess i'll try harder. I dont think i'll paint the sway bar, probably just polished it up with simple green. The bushings.....are those the stock rubber black ones youre talking about?

yep i put new rubber in all round. It did take quite a bit of pulling to get the sway bar out ,, something you want o be carfull of itf your car is on jackstand. Can't remember how I did it now. Think i braced my feet on another part of the car and heaved ...

I don't know about the 911 sway bar, but on other cars I've worked on, the wheels had to be hanging down off the ground to get the torque off the bar to be able to remove it.

Jay: Yes the wheels are off and the car is on jack stands. It looks like its going to take an incredible amound of force to get this thing off.
Is there a way to get the tie rods off without removing the sway bar?
I think I can just tear up the rubber bushing if I am just going to buy a new one, that will get it out, but then the hard part is how the heck will I put this thing back in!

I was actually able to get mone back in .... took lots of lube on the rubber and a fair bit of grunting a graoning.. Think iended up wedgin a 2 by 4 somewher and bending the bar around it ... I was cramped for days after wards .. but what a great feeling when I was able to do it ..
