1985 Porsche 911 mirror replacement
This describes a nice, little upgrade that adds safety to your older 911.
If you have a flat, passenger side mirror then you may have notice the lack of visual angle prevents you from seeing everything in the blind spot.
My flat mirror decided it had enough after 22 years and dropped off the mounting plate. I found plate glass replacements. Convex is p/n P471119 (944-731-035-06) and Flat is P471502 (944-731-035-02) as seen at www.carbodyparts.net/porsche-mirrors.html (not recommended source, shown for reference). My cost was $40 + SH +Ca Tx. Of course mirror with backing is also available at higher price.
It arrived as Burco 3614, www.burcoinc.com.
Installation:
1) Remove backing from mirror assemble on car. There are three spring clips, just pull straight out. Disconnect two heater wires.
2) Scrape and clean backing with rubbing alcohol. Clean mirror with glass cleaner.
3) I used black Peratex silicon rubber since it was available and I wanted a consistent interface between the heated backing and mirror. Burco had included adhesive foam patches which I did not use.
4) I applied beads of silicon and spread it with a flat putty knife building thicker amounts in the center due to convex glass. Silicon was applied to both surfaces.
5) The backing had a small lip and the glass dropped right in for perfect orientation. Just make sure you orient the glass so the words are at the bottom when mirror is installed on the car.

You know, I personally prefer the flat over the convex. I like to see an image undistorted. (Although over my bed at home I use the convex in mirrors,--"objects are larger than they appear")...

Nice, I've been thinking about this for a while now. I did not know anyone was making convex replacements. Why do you say that carbodyparts is not a good source and it arrived as Burco?
