I hear ya Scott...maybe we all can agree on SW chips, oil, religion, or politics, but not this . Actually, most of the time, on the rear (unless I'm doing suspension work), I do let the the torsion bar covers "cradle" in the jack stand's post, as it's more stable than using the built in pad imo. On the front, I usually place a small block of 2x4 between the top of the jack stand and the built in pad. With any technique, the main thing is to make sure she's good and stable on the stands, and to use a backup (i.e. tires placed under the car, etc.) in case a stand fails...better safe than squashed. I'm starting to get a bad case of "scissor lift envy"...

Someone sent me a PM asking about the Carrera pads, so for the archives, here's a couple of links that shows the pads.

Note Bill Verberg's "jacking point diagram" for non-Carrera's in this thread:

Hope this helps everyone, be SAFE under there!

I bought a Rotary 4 post lift after 35 years of jacking cars up and working under them. No more jackstands, no more worries! If I am just doing brake work I only jack up one wheel and don't get under the car.

For less than $4 you should buy 4 hockey pucks to put between your car suspension/body and your jacks. It's a good solution for minimizing the scratching of the delicate undercoating,--that only weakens with age.

Finally a good use for a honky punk. I'll try it too. but whay would you put a jack directly onto the underbelly of the car? there as so many other places to jack.

You never want to put jacks under the body pan. I think Edgyo1 meant to put the hockey puck between the jack stand and the solid body mount to prevent cracking/breaking of the undercoating seal. For example: on my 88 Carrera, there are jacking points at the outer rear of the front wheel wells and to the front of the rear wheel wells in front of the torsion bar housings. There is also the torsion bars and the option to use the jack plate in the side jack mounts. I've got to find me some pucks myself.

I remember a post by someone asking what the strange round indentions where on the foot wells. must have been mis-placed hockey pucks.

I use a hockey puck to rest the jack pad on when jacking, but I've found that for me, a section of 2x4 between the jack stands and the Carrera built in jack pads works great. For the rear when using the torsion bar covers (most of the time) I let the t-bar cover "cradle in the jack stand" protected by a folded shop rag.

I usually jack up the entire front end using a long piece of wood place on the cross bar just in front of the spare tire. I find it much easier for placing on jackstands. I have never been a fan of using the side lift points with the jack style tool.

I lift the rear the same way, but I use a block of wood instead of a newpaper.
