HID or LEDs for 911SC, H4 Reflector or Projector, Light cutt off etc
Hey guys,
New to the forum ... I've got an '82 SC Targa that I've had for 7 years .. love it. My dad gave it to me when he became obsessed with his 356. Its been a daily driver since new ..
Anyway, the point at hand. I've got the original US spec sealed beam headlights. They are cadles at best, pathetic. I've almost hit a curb on a handful of occassions. I've read all the posts here with guys upgrading to HIDs.
What bothers me is the idea of having an HID assembly in a reflector housing. Most HIDs that are factory are in a headlight that is a projector (through a lens). Wouldn't the reflector housing be too much unfocused light? I see HIDs in supped up honda civics in reflector housings and light is going all over the place, looks trashy/rice burner-esq if you ask me. I want to avoid this.
A few years ago i was going to buy the Hella H4 euro headlights but never did. Now they make a "sealed beam" replacement version .. its the same as the old sealed beam but you can actually put an H4 bulb in the back. see attached picture. If i stuck an HID H4 assembly in this new fixture i think i would still be unfocused light? Anyone have any experience with this?
I was seaching to see if anyone made a "projector" assembly for a 911SC that included a LENS to focus the light. THis is what i found ...(second picture) please let me know what you think. WOuld the HID light be more focused with something like this?
I was also considering, you may think i'm nuts (i probably am), of using the latest generation LED lights that are bright as F###. ONE single LED would 2x the output of my current candles, much less 3 or 4 of them.
Please give me your input.
Thanks!!

I love original equipment, that said I put the new, "new" sylvania h4 in my '88 911. they are super white and I can see forever. my cousin has an s-2000 with HID so I understand just how nice they are. if you can hide that much power inside a stock looking package, go for it. you just have to tape over them at the track anyway.

I understand and feel your pain. I have Euro H4s, and they were 'OK' at best when I bought the car. I took them apart, cleaned the housings, and replaced the bulbs with new Silverstars. I was afraid that they would appear 'tinted' but they are nice and white.
Before I did that, I did quite a bit of research on upgrading to HIDs. I had HIDs in my previous car (Audi), and grew to love them. However, unless you want to build your own, I don't think you'll find anything that will look 'correct' on your car. Good luck, and if you do find something that will fit behind an H4 reflector, let me know.
Later,
Mike

get the $60.00 silverstars, not the $40.00 silverstars. they are brand new. I have the old "new" in my ford. they are nice but the new ones are even better.

I'm thinking the same thing you are, and I'm doing something about it now! My Bosch H4s are coming in tomorrow, to replace my H5s (mine is an '88 Carrera), which are pure crap. My headlight relays are hopefully on their way from Marcus Sucro. As soon as I can have my body shop shoot the decorative rings Grand Prix White, in they go w/ HIDs, hiding the ballasts and ignitors in the trunk.
I understand that the Bosch H4 is a free form light, like the H5, but have a distinct cut off, limiting the height of the light being emitted. I have a friend w/ HIDs in Bosch H4s on his RS America and the result is very good. A clear cut, flat-line limits the height of the light, which can blind oncoming traffic, and the rest is a very, very white and bright light. Like daytime.
I'll post pictures as I do the upgrade.

Love the H-4's over the stock sealed beams! Projectors would be nice but a serious PITA to install! Guy on pelican parts used the projectors out of a MINI to upgrade his 911. Nice writeup!

Sorry I'm taking so long, guys. Actually, the H4s are in. But the HID conversion hasn't been done yet. (Don't ask. A bit ago, I hit some wood on the freeway and so I had the body shop install the H4s.) Sometime later this week, I'll do the HID conversions and I'll try and take some pictures. BTW: The H4s, just with the standard 55/60w bulbs are discernably much better than the H5s. I can actually see at night.

Before you start messing around with aftermarket HIDs you should read the comments of lighting guru Daniel Stern: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...s/Hid/HID.html

Get a relay, or you will be replacing your turn signal unit soon. $30, 1/2 hour of work, can be hidden in the battery well. I did mine Monday morning.

Actually, I already have the relays, though I was told that because HIDs requre less current to operate, that they likely would not be necessary. (HIDs take more power than halogen lights when being ignited, but then to operate after ignited, they requre much less current.)
