Default Im new to 911's

Hi all,
I currently own a 944 and have found what looks to be a good deal on a 1978 SC, is this a good year? I know basically nothing about 911's so keep that in mind.

It comes with no engine so what years/engines will fit in best? Actually what are engine specs for this model?

Oh and here is pics of the $3900 dollar car:

welcome

where are you located?

the SC is one of the best early 911s. pretty much bullet proof

came with a 3 litre but any carrera 3.2, 964 3.4 or 993 3.6 litre will fit without too much hassle

the car you've pictured looks pretty rough...rear deck looks like its fiberglass (not original) and broken, paint around the windows is coming off, stone guard is missing on one side.

does it have a gearbox?

whats the interior like?

how long has it been sitting in that field, out in the weather???

these things get expensive quickly ie if you wanted a rebuilt 3.0 you could easily spend $10kUS

i'd keep looking

Have a look at https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=46185

As mentioned above, the golden rule is Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI), which I very much doubt that car would pass. I say keep looking...

Good luck with the search,

Paul.

He said the deck is fine it just looks weird from the pictures. To me this seemed like a good deal because all the 911 are all over $9000. I am looking for another project, so i dont mind rough edges. Having said that i know you guys know way more about these cars than i do. So ill keep looking, probably a 951 but one of these days when i get a little older.... Everyday those 993 turbos keep calling my name..

There are few things more expensive than a free 911.

That said, I'd take it to a shop to see if there's 4K worth of parts in it.

an experienced 911 guy would have to look long and hard at this, given you are new to the model , I say keep looking.. even if you buy an engine you could be 7- 9 grand in nad still have a huge unknown.. keep looking ..

PS good luck with that 2 year turbo .. very desireable machine and very big dollars.. :-)

Does it come with a transmission?
How is the interior?
Brakes?
Rust?

Run a search on how much a motor/transmission will cost you before going further.

Any later model air-cooled motor wil fit, just a matter of how much you want to spend.

IMHO, I would try to locate a good running wreck and swap running gear.

Looks like a parts car to me.

John
